Good afternoon everybody! I've come here for some assistance finding games, had a search through the threads here but getting bewildered by all the information coming up so hope no one minds me creating a new thread :p

Basically I love playing RPGs, all kinds. The western varieties I prefer on PC (i.e. Oblivion, Dragon Age etc). The consoles are where I come for my JRPG fix.

The issue I find myself in is that I don't really know what the good JRPGs are across the platforms (I own XBox360, PS3 and DS) so would love any pointers where to look! My preferences are for turn based combat (although this is now proper old school and hard to come by) and story driven. FPS RPGs like Oblivion I'm not interested in at all on consoles and if I'm honest I don't really want ones which are open-ended over story, I like being forced down particular paths every now and then!

I'm guessing saying what I own would be helpful as well, so:

XBox 360
  • Fable 2
  • Last Remnant
PS3
  • Final Fantasy 13
  • White Knight Chronicles
  • Final Fantasy 7-9 (from PSN store)
DS
  • Most pokemons
  • DragonQuest 9
  • Final Fantasy 3
So, not exactly a big list, the main problem is I have no clue what genre games are anymore as I've used my consoles more for sport/racing games since owning and haven't kept up to date!

Im loving Star Ocean The Last Hope at the moment, It was on 360 alone but has gotten one of the "International" treatments for the PS3 version

Story driven and turn based you say...

Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and The Last Remnant are all excellent, have turn based combat and recommended in that order; you've tried LR, what did you think of it?
I also loved Tales of Vesperia which is probably the best traditional jrpg of the generation but isn't turn based.

Others I'd recommend and that I've finished are Magna Carta 2, a really good fun Korean rpg, Infinite Undiscovery which is quite good but does have some quite twitchy combat, Enchanted Arms; almost a 360 launch title and dated but very traditional with very good tactical turn based combat and quite fun.

I really didn't get on with Star Ocean IV but I was quite rpged out at the time and probably should try again and Eternal Sonata which I despite an interesting story had repetitive twitchy tripe combat.

I only managed 5 hours of FFXIII on the PS3 and got a bit bored but I will come back to it at some point.

Hmm, looks good (also cheap!). From the Lost Odyssey review Blue Dragon is similar but more "kiddy", is that correct?

Not that I really mind, I do play pokemon after all.

I'm playing through Pokemon Heart Gold atm as well and I love Blue Dragon. Ok, it's a tad easy and a tad kiddie but I loved it.

Resonance of Fate
Lost Odyssey
Enchanted Arms
Trinity Universe
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

Tales of Vesperia is another to add to the list

Cool, shall look into them as well.

Have to say not sure about this one. Played one of the Star Oceans back in the days of the PS2 and couldn't get into liking it. Worth a try or likely to be more of the same?

Shame you don't have a PS2 :D The best Console imo for RPG's if you include all the great PS1 RPG's as well.

My PS3 plays PS2 games. Plus I prob do have my old PS2 somewhere, unless I gave it away.

PS2 was awesome, Suikodens were good, Breath of Fires, Final Fantasys et al.

The combat is funny, still can't make up my mind if I ever liked it which has prevented me really enjoying it. Plan to go back to it eventually but can't help feel a bit "meh" when playing it if you get my drift.

Cool cool cool, even more suggestions! I really will have to make a list of all these :D

Final Fantasy 13, Lost Odyssey and last Remnants are my faves from this generation. keeping in mind i've not really played any on PS3 :p

Last Remnants however is much better on a PC, It suffers horribly on 360 from shocking framerates and loading times. To the point later on in the game, I stopped playing and swapped it for the PC one. Installing the discs to the hard drive is an idea, and does improve things, but framerates dont get much better.

With regards to blue dragon, i wasnt a fan. I'm more of a fan of...realistic JRPGs? I know that sounds daft considering i just listed the above 3. But blue dragon is too cartoony and childish for me. I hated it

It may very well be the case, But this was my first Star Ocean so I cant feed any more stuff from the PS2 one, Someone else may be able to fill you in on the similarities.

But if PS2 is an option, After listening to some guy from Atlus waffle on about Persona on a podcast, I literally got a copy of Persona 3 FES in the post this morning, I'd say the battles are near enough the JRPG standard, But then again im only like 40 minutes in, But from what ive played of the core game so far its very different indeed and worth a try since its not the most expensive game about nowadays, thats if you havent already played them.

3 and 4 are on PS2 and 3 has a rerelease on PSP that is out stateside that you could possibly import if you fancied it.

With an endorsement like that ill have to get that after im done with 3 :P

I started 3 the other day, not liking it anywhere near as much the characters feel kinda robotic in comparison to the comedy genius with the P4 characters. :(

It's still good though but I'm not sure if it will top this;

Animal crackers are serious business in Persona 4. :D

So...Persona games. they worry me, I have never played one, but someone tells me the fights and stuff in the games, they're battles with peoples feelings/emotions(persona)?? Is that right? because that sounds wierd to me.

i have fond memories of tales of vesperia i have played most but this title always sticks out due to me playing on my loud 360 :( still finished it and was hoping they would fetch it out on ps3 .
