Yesterday, it was announced that as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, my home town of Chelmsford became a city along with Perth and St Asaph.

I'm not sure where this leave us really. Chelmsford is the County Town of Essex but this can't hold can it and potentially this could mean higher rates of local taxation.

Chelmsford is in dire need of modernisation. It's become a refuge for London based commuters (including my self i must add) and migrating residents from inner London seeking cheaper housing, so although the population is growing, the town (or City now) doesn't see much in terms of growth to the area. There are plans for a new shopping area which includes a new John Lewis but I'm not sure how this will survive if residents aren't actually in the area to spend. Outside, people will have a choice, Lakeside, or Westfield.. I think people would most likely chose these.

So, would the city status bring prosperity to the area? Is it's new status along with the others a good thing?

As IRF says, there's already a thread on it. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18383457

I did a bit of reading yesterday, and the jury is very much out on whether or not gaining city status is of any benefit whatsoever. It's extremely hard to tell if modernisation/redevelopment/investment came into the city because it is a new city, or if the town became a city because moodernisation/redvelopment and investment came into it.

What is certain though, is that just because you are a city doesn't automatically mean you'll propser moreso than if you were a town.
