In about fifteen minutes, I shall be leaving for a Judo grading at the Budo Kwai dojo in the south kensington area. I am currently a 7th kyu (high orange), and will hopefully achieve either 5th or 4th kyu (high green or low blue). Should have pictures for later this afternoon/evening. Anyone else attending? and also, wish me luck.

heh, whoops. completely forgot about the other sections of the forums.

well, report. 2 fights, one i won, other i lost. Went up one kyu to low green belt. Bit annoyed for several reasons. a lot of people got three fights, I only got two. First fight I won against someone 5kg heavier than me, so that was good. Second was against someone with a 15kg weight advantage, and serveal grades higher than me. was a bit annoying, as they gave a win for his throw when it should only have been a 7 points, as I landed on my side rather than my back.

Ah well, roll on my next one, in august.

Sounds like it went OK, though :( about the loss, it did sound unfair.

I haven't been to judo in while though, what weight group were you in (are there for gradings?) when I did my mon grades it was just by rough body size.

they just ask for weight, and try to put you up against people of similar abilities. I'm a shade under 90kg, this guy was about 105 to 110 kg.

ah, mon grades. These are senior kyus.

As I said, I'm not too down about it, at least I'm now a green belt, and I can grade again in 8 weeks, on the august bank holiday weekend.

What's involved in a Judo grading then? Just sparring?

You get graded before on theory, just got to show that you know how to perform moves i.e. throws, hold downs chokes and arm locks. You can get this graded up to however high you want. Then you go to a fight and you get graded on this, you need to be graded on theory first though. Your grade is whatever your practical grade is at.
