Jumping Mad

Silly question time!......

How do you get that little git to stay still?! I'm assuming it's a live specimen?

So both flashes are just permanently and acting as a really bright light rather than being fired as you take the shot? I may have misinterpreted your blog page. Is this how you work with most your macro stuff or are you using a TTL Cable/wireless option to trigger the flash? I am really intruiged!

How have you not lost him yet, he's so small?

PS> we must start a Macro thread.

He did nearly escape during the last shoot, luckily i found him just befor he entered my mixer. Yeah a macro thread is a great idea.

Seeing the latter shots puts in perspective how much of a macro you've got in shot one in the post

Yeah they really are tiny, Some indonesian jumping spider can grow to over 1cm and are really crzy looking.

Yep it's very much alive. I was photographing it for a good hour and only got about 50 in focus shots. A lot of patience and perseverance is required.

No, sorry the pictures in the blog are a bit Misleading. Both flashes are being triggered wirelessly by the D90's commander mode, I had the flashes on when taking the set up pics Which is why they look like they are on constantly.
Because the lightin in the room was poor and i was mostly shooting at 1.1 I used a lamp to give a bit more light on the subject which aids focusing.

Thanks, makes perfect sense. One more question though, I know nothing about 'commander mode' on the D90. Does commander mode only work for 'additional' supported flashes that are not on the hotshoe? Basically, I am looking at buying one flash to use externally. I want to use it either on a bracket by way of a TTL cable/wireless trigger. Will I need to buy a TTL cable or wireless trigger if commander mode will fire the flash externally or does it only work for additional flashess that are not on the camera? if you get what i mean? I cannot afford two flashes just yet, so want to experiment with the one for now, but it needs to be off camera and so am uncertain as to what to buy? What did you use to trigger your Nissin when you wanted to trigger it off camera? Or do I not need a wireless trigger with the D90? Its all very confusing :)

You dont need a seperate wireless trigger for the D90 as it has its own built in (commander mode)

Commander mode is simply the D90's wirles trigger mode, It can be used with any compatible flash gun that has wireless/slave mode.

With commander mode you can set up each flash Individually, You could have all 3 flashes set to TTL (sb-600, nissin and the onbaord flash) Or you could have the sb-600 set to manual, the nissin set to TTL and the onboard flash set to not fire, you can use any combination you like.

It triggers the flash guns wirelessly by the camera's on board flash. I'm not sure if you can use commander mode with a flash gun mounted on the hot shot as its the on board flash thats used as the trigger. Give me a while and i'll have a test.

Both the nissin and sb-600 were triggered by the d90's onbaord flash in commander mode.

I also have a Nikon SC-28 TTL Remote Cord and to be honest i rarely use it. Comannder mode is so easy to set up and use, even in bright day light it seems to work.

sorry if I'm not explaining things very well, If you have any more question feel free to ask.

EDIT: The only nikon flashes you can use in the hotshot to trigger other flashes while in commander mode is the sb-800 and sb-900, the sb-600 wont work, I dont see this as a massive problem though.

heres a simple video demonstrating nikon's CLS

You sir are a star! Thank you for a quite simply perfect reply. I completely understand. :D I am away the whole of next week, so will spend some time having a ponder over which one to buy. Thanks again buddy; and keep snapping, these are terrific. :)

Do you know what the below statement means?

"The Di622, (in common with the YN-465) doesn't work with CLS, it does have a built-in optical slave, but this isn't the same as working wirelessly with CLS. The downside of the Nissin flash is that it won't work with any of the wireless triggers on the market without a mod (requires sending to Nissin) whereas the YN-465 will. "

The YN-465 is the Yongnuo flash which gets really good reviews, and I was originally quite keen to get this flash and a wireless trigger setup, but then I realised the Nissin has the inbuilt slave mode which would work in Commander mode thus coming out about the same price once you factor in some wireless triggers. I was then curious as to whether the YN-465 has this built in slave mode as this would mean I could buy two of those for the same monies as the Nissin and still remaining under £100 budget. I asked the question to a seller of the Yongnuo's over on the TP forums and the above is the reply. I am still steering nearer to the Nissin; but don't understand the above. Any ideas?

Sorry to hijack on your thread ;)

Thanks :)

Hmm, not entirely sure what he means?

It seems i'm confussing CLS (creative lightin system) with AWL (advanced wireless lighting)

I't seems AWL falls under CLS, but CLS covers a range of things
Have a look here, bottom of the page.

and here

The nissin will work without any triggers by AWL, but it might not have all the functions of CLS, maybe this is what he means??

I'll do some reasearch, between us we can get to the answers :)

Note that the Di622 will fire via optical or IR signal, but it cannot be used with a standard center-pin radio trigger system as the circuitry is designed differently. It will not work with Flash Waves, Pocket Wizards, Skyports, Cactus, etc.

Last negative would be that the Nissin Di622 doesn’t offer high-speed sync where you can use your flash beyond your camera’s sync speed.

the Nissin Di622 is tough to match in performance and value. It’s a real workhorse used successfully by pros and amateurs alike. While it lacks certain OEM features like the Nikon CLS or Canon Wireless ETTL ratio syncronization, most 3rd party flashes at this price range don’t offer these OEM features either.

Yeah, think its going to need some more research; thanks for your help though. I think however, I am going to go with the Nissin. Before I do so, can I just double check you can fire it wirelessly in commander mode whilst having the onboard flash disabled? Also, I am preusming no modifications were made to it? Reading the reviews for the Nissin, the one thing it cannot do is work wirelessly (even with wireless triggers) with the exception off the onboard flash triggering it. I am presuming the Commander mode somehow allows it to work? even though triggers cannot?

Will have a read of your links in a bit :-)

Just seen your update. That makes sense and concludes Nissin it is :-)

Thanks again for all your help, really appreciate it. I am away next week so will do a bit of research if I manage to get a internet connection. Will update you once I have bought it.

Yes you can definitely fire the Nissin Wirelessly with the D90's commander mode. No modsifications.

You must have the onboard flash up all the time but you can set it to -- which means it will only fire the preflash needed to trigger the flash gun.
most of the time this flash cannot be seen in picture, It's only if your photographing some thing highly reflective, Like a mirror or high polish metal object you can sometimes see it in picture and thats only if your working close to the subject.
The other time you can some times see it is if your shooting in the dark, even when the on baord flash is set to -- it can illuminate the subject, Again this only really happens if your doing macro work and are very close to the subject.
Nikon sell a small bit of plastic that hangs in front of the on board flash to stop the above problems. you could easily made one yourself.

Have you considered a second hand SB-600? that would be top of my list, If your lucky you might get one around the £120 mark

While I THINK every thing I've told you is correct please do some research, I dont want to be misinforming you.

lol, I used my jedi powers on him.

cheers for your comment. Thanks to every one thats visited my blog to I'm going to keep it nice and updated with new stuff.
