I am having a bit of a problem with my car, the revs of the engine seems to jump increase too much when i press the accelerator, in that this jumps far more then it should then falls again even though i have the accelerator pressed down. Does anyone know what could be causing this? My car is a mitsubishi carisma 1.6 glxi
Thanks in advance guys :)

Entirely depends on the car, its a pretty involved job on most cars.

Last time I had one (on a VAG 1.9 TDI) it cost 330 and the clutch and flywheel cost 650 to replace on the mondeo.

I'd expect sub 300 on a smaller petrol engine though

bummer, thanks mate :)
time to decide if the car is worth fixing now.. its a 1998 carisma 1.6 with 132K miles on it... would you keep driving till the clutch goes and get a replacement car (spend about £1500-2000 max) or just get the clutch replaced?

Clutch HAS gone :)

You dont want to leave it much longer or you'll get no drive at all.

Only you can answer the question though - is the car reliable otherwise? Does it still fulfill your needs? If so keep it and fix it.

Otherwise, you could replace it but bearing in mind a car of that age with a dead clutch wont be worth anything to sell/trade

I wouldnt really use the car at all, its likely to go in the very near future.

the next couple of 1000 miles will be iffy to say the least. whether you keep it needs to be decided now. if you plan on keep ing the car for a year or two get it done, if not buy a new car. if you keep driving it, it will cost you more than a clutch in recovery.

Thanks guys... the fault is intermitten. I can start the car, stick it in 4th gear on a level road and drive off without the car stalling.
The rev seems to rise rapidly every so often when i press the accelerator.

Re those prices ... the clutch started slipping this weekend on my family wagon (Xsara Picasso 1.6 Diesel) Citroen wanted £975 for a new clutch!!! Funnily enough it's getting done for £360 all in elsewhere.

Shop around.

I'd replace the clutch if i was you. Better that than waking up one day and not being able to make it into work and then still have to replace the clutch.

Not sure I understand this?

What's wrong with just carrying on driving it until the clutch goes? Me and my Dad did almost 10,000 miles (mostly motorway to be fair) in an old 306 with a slipping clutch...

Though I would concur with others and suggest replacing the car.

I had an intermittent slipping clutch on my old Golf GTI - we think it was caused by oil leaking onto the clutch plate but never bothered diagnosing it properly.

It was like that for at least 2 years before I had the car and I owned it a good 8 months after that time and it was still going (albeit slipping wildly every now and then)

Exactly, as I said before if the car's otherwise reliable and still suitable it would be stupid to ditch it.

It really is a false economy to wait as well. You're going to need to replace it at some point, so best do it sooner rather than later or it'll cost you more in recovery. Really not worth the risk of getting stuck.

If the clutch is slipping simply because it's worn rather than oil contamination, then continuing to drive it will increase the chances of damage to the flywheel. If the flywheel needs to be resurfaced or replaced it will significantly increase repair costs...
