We all say a 1 console future would be a bad idea, due to competition being good for business and the consumer.

But what would you guys think to say Microsoft or Sony taking Nintendo under their wing?

A Fun debate based on no fact other than the companies exist.

I can never see Microsoft or Sony joining forces. But Nintendo and Sony? Considering they are both Japanese?

Microsoft and Nintendo backed by Microsofts fantastic run this generation?

If anyone is going to take any others under their wing it will be Nintendo taking either MS or Sony. They have been in the market longer and so far this generation, are outselling both of their competitors.

Interesting question though. Ideally MS and Sony joining forces to make a 'super' console would be the best combination. they seem to have similar interests and goals and hence similar services with nintendo being the odd one out.

Can never see it happening in a million years tbh - I don't think either MS or Sony could afford Nintendo after the success of the Wii.

In many ways I like this idea and in many ways I hate it.

The ideal would be a console manufactured by Sony but with a higher spec GPU and a more simplified CPU with extra raw power. The online store and online gaming department could be taken care of by Microsoft although somehow be free of charge :D Then Nintendo could release a third party peripheral Wiimote style controller and you have the perfect setup imo.

Joining console companys would be terrible for us consumers. The need for a console "war" is what makes the games even better and the price drops keep coming. Microsoft and Sony joining would be terrible for us as a consumer base.

"Taking Nintendo under their wing"?

You talk about it as thought Nintendo needs any help in running a console business, which is pretty hilarious given that they're the only ones who can figure out how to - duh - make a profit on the bloody things.

IIRC Nintendo have got more money in the bank than Sony and if we were to only look at the console side of the business then Microsoft have failed miserably so far in terms of profit.

Only reason that MS can keep going in the market at the moment is because of their insane bank account funds that have been accumulated via other endeavors. I'm not saying they won't turn out a (probably huge) profit at the end of the day, it's just that at present any other company would have pulled out after the original Xbox.

I do think the best combo of console companies would be Microsoft and Sony, as previously stated they both have the same goals in the market, all it would take would be to integrate both sets of software developers into the same machine and it would be awesome.

I also said joining forces. I didn't mention anything to do with business or problems.

It's a light hearted debate, try and See it that way. :)

Dont think that matters given the money MS and sony have at their disposal. Nintendo are most likely to get screwed in the long term, simply due to financial reasons. Thats why I think nintendo rule, they use innovation and creativity to win this generation despite impossible odds (again based on the money MS and Sony have at their disposal)

So you would want to create one manufacturer for consoles effectively removing all competition. In which case they can charge whatever they want as the consumer has no other choice if they choose to purchase a console.

I'm sorry but Microsoft's entertainment division (includes the Xbox, Zune etc) has been making profit for the past 2 quarters. So all this talk about Microsoft only being around because of the massive budgets is incorrect.

Sony Computer Entertainment are the ones that are operating at a loss at present.

Nintendo are indeed the only console manufacturers to be making a profit from day one.

Well my concept was more,

Sony + Nintendo VS Microsoft

Or

Microsoft + Nintendo Vs Sony

So, Competition would still exist

The problem with the Wii is that they sell fewer games for it per console than they do for the other two. The large proportion of MS and Sony's profits come from the games themselves.

There were rumours that MS tried to buy out Nintendo, but Nintendo didn't like the idea.

Sony and Nintendo were working together before the PS1 was released but they had a disagreement as Sony wanted to use discs and Nintendo wanted to use a cartridge. You can read about it on Wikipedia.
