...for £5.24 in the Steam sale, would you recommend playing them in order of their release? I quite often like to start with the most recent game to build up some love for the franchise and then go back to the earlier games - usually I missed the earliest games because of the large gap I had in gaming between 1998 and 2012. Are the storylines independent of each other?

Yes.

Please for the love of God do not use the Complete mods.

If it's your first time, use ZRP on Shadow of Chernobyl, it fixes bugs and various other things while being Vanilla.

Quite possibly my favourite games of all time.

I would say it's not essential that you play them in order, though given the choice I probably would. If you find something not to your liking, then let me know, as I'm always modding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. & should be able to help (like many other fellow Stalkers will on here). :)

My own preference would likely be down to two different orders:

1) SOC
2) CS
3) COP

or...

1) CS
2) SOC
3 COP

The most enjoyable / best mod I've played for SOC is probably OGSE 0.6.9.3.

That's great guys. I have to admit that I've been gaming on the PC for 5 years now but have never really bothered with modding. Aside from going in to a few config.ini files to be able to play games at 3440x1440p I really don't know how to do it. So as a complete newb to mods, how do I use ZRP on Chernobyl? Could you list a few instructions for me?

Most of the time it's just a case of moving a folder called 'gamedata' into your Stalker directory. For Steam, it will be C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\THQ\S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl (or whatever game in the series you're modding).

Thanks. I followed the instructions in the read me file and it seems to be working. When it said to copy the 'game data directory' in the instructions I take it this means to copy the entire game data folder? That's what I did and like I said it seems to be all good...

Brace yourself, [X-Ray Engine.exe has encountered an error and must close] are coming.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series are such beautiful disasterpieces, despite what people say about experiencing Vanilla first, the 'complete' mods reduce crashes and bugs a great deal.

Yeah, I just copied the gamedata folder over to the main game directory. I wanted to make sure myself as this is one mod that I've seldom used before.

After having installed the mod, you should see something like ZRP 1.07 etc in the lower left corner of the menu screen.

If you want to tinker with anything, you'll find this in your game directory in Steam. I only noticed it by accident (it's called 'modifier').

The stalker complete mods are very good I find and really add a lot to the game, especially the weather effects, the game pulls of atmosphere so well.
The only thing that irked me about the original game was that it seems to start hard and get a bit easier.

While I agree. They do take away some of the charm of vanilla in my opinion. Great franchise and shocking that it doesn't have a bigger following really.

Play them in order. I bought Stalker upon original release, after several delays. It's a damn good game, if not a little clunky. Clear Sky is a bit better and more refined.
