New on here guys so be nice and play nice!!

Just got myself:

XFX Nforce 790i motherboard
Q9650 Intel CPU @ 3ghz
Zalman 9700NT CPU cooler
SLi ready 2000mhz DDR3 ram (4gb of it)
Vista Ultimate x64
WD Raptor 10k rpm hdd
XFX GTX280 XXX Edition gpu
Thermaltake 1000w sli ready PSU

have i done the right thing, mainly using it for gaming as i play a vast majority of games online and offline so thought getting this after weeks of reading up about them i thought this would be the best way to go!

Possibly going to overclock on air cooling.

What do you guys think?

Dangerous question to ask - what if we say "no, it's rubbish!"

Connect it all up and give it a whirl.

Looks good to me. I think generally people prefer the P45/X38/X48 chipsets to 790i, but if you plan on adding another 280 at some point you didn't have much choice, did you?

i dont think they will all fit together, and the PSU will blow everything up.

wouldnt have gone and bought everything without a please spec me thread...

Nice spec, only thing I would change is the motherboard, but would be a personal thing.

Enjoy :)

my original choice was the ASUS Striker II Extreme motherboard. But saw this and read up about it and decided on it as I will be running 2 of the 280 GTX XXX cards soon, although the Striker II Extreme SLi too, the XFX board will do me for now. If it comes to it, ill sell it and get the ASUS instead!

I'm with chimerical, that's one crazy expensive setup, get pictures up when you eventually get everything. You want to replace a £280 motherboard, why? I'm sure the XFX will cope with 2 gtx280's. I hope all of this is gettting played on a monster monitor at some ridiculous resolution :p

Looks good to me... would love a 790i if i could afford it!

All i've been thinking though is 'wonder what the difference in price between this and an i7 rig would be?'

gt

Edit: Couldn't get exact matches but i'd imagine the C2Q spec is close to yours.

C2Q:

i7:

Adding the i7 (940) @ 2.93ghz will up the i7 total by £220.

Looks good, should work a treat. Personally I would have changed a few things around, but each to their own :)

What would you have changed, Sniper? I'm thinking about a similar setup. Maybe going 780i to take advantage od the DDR2 I already spent my money on :)

Im only using a 2ms Samsung 20" monitor at 1600 x 1050 im playing at. could always rig it up to my 42" 1080p tv and do it that way with HDMI output of the PC? lol

as soon as i get the whole lot and get it together ill post pics up, yes even with some bread if you like lol.

Hopefully soon, most places are out of stock of the XXX gpu and the processor atm!

see i could still get the Striker II Extreme mobo and cancel my XFX order one, but i want to givee XFX a go at the moment, and i only paid £220 for it! Brand new also!

Probably, but in real world terms (gaming) I doubt it will make much difference. The only real benefit atm is SLi on an Intel chipset.

There are benches around showing quite a large gain by using a i7 over a highly clocked C2Q, can't remember the thread though. However it should be noted this was using a monster setup, I think it included 280GTX SLI and 4870 crossfire. So the difference was in rigs above your average rig.

To OP, nice setup! It'll fly :)

Although to anyone else spending that kind of money, as gt_junkie has suggested it would be worth considering the i7 route :)
