Only just set it up, and synced these photos (crappy iPhone for you!).

Really easy, don't even need the CD, and nor have I even looked at the documents.

Pulled out my first gen Airport Extreme and nas, replaced with above!

Peeeeeeerrrrfect.

Now I gotta leave it on because I believe Time Machine's first backup is a killer (2-3? hours or more).

It's excellent, gigabyte LAN iMac - Time Capsule/Router - 20mb Virgin.

Should give me decent transfer rates?:)

Anyway...

Thoughts.

Mine *should* arrive tomorrow hopefully!!

I hummed and aahed for a while and decided it was a cracking idea...

Hopefully i'll have more to report tomorrow - hope you dont mind if i post when I've had a go!

So it is a wireless router and 500GB in one?

Can you use it for other things besides time machine? ie just a hard drive to store music/videos on for windows/osx access?

Was looking at either one of these or an Icy Box 2xSata with 2x750GB for £285

Yes, as it stands now before I launch Time Machine for the first time it simply is a HDD NAS. But as some might agree, with me having an extreme base station it didnt like other NAS's. So I decided to get this as its a router with gigabyte and a NAS built all in one.

@ tsinc80697 You can use it as a regular NAS, and put your iTunes library on (if you want to share the music) as a popular example.

Nice purchase btw PAC2008 :)

Well to report it has not only done the main first-time backup but has now changed to hourly etc...

Not a lot to report really, it just bloody works out of the box...

Just a query guys. Is it ok for me now to format and reinstall Leopard? and during the installation process use the T'Capsule to reinstall my stuff?

Just a second thought, it has backup'd all my iTunes, Photo's & Apps right?

Doesnt have much options in Time Machine.

Cheers.

I'd plug the Time Capsule in to the iMac if you're going to reinstall the OS.

Transferring the entire backup across Wi-Fi isn't going to be pretty :(

Once it's finished you could just unplug it and you're good to go.

It's connected by ethernet EVH, so thats fine. I'm just a tad worried as to what it has backed up? I cannot risk my precious iTunes stuff. :p

With my regular Time Machine backup, I can also browse the backup within Finder, as opposed to the Time Machine interface. Can you do this with Time Capsule to see if your information is backed up?

I thought Time Machine backed up everything (by default).

If there are no options to change what it backs up then I won't be getting one.

Yes, it defaults to everything. There is an option to exclude certain files/directories, so unless anything is added here, the OP should be fine.

I offer no guarantees though, so don't blame me if you lose data!

The date is now tomorrow... grr! Luckly though cos I'm off!

From what I read.. you can tell it to exclude/include certain directories, but you can't exclude by filetype, ie movies over 2gb etc.. I may be wrong!

My main reason, apart from it being damn shexy is the fact that it will back up all my stuff.. Although I agree that it would be useul to exclude certain files - but you might as well do manual backups then... From what I gather the whole point of the time machine / time capsule combination, is the fact that it can be left to update in the background...

Glad its working ok!!

Can anyone recommend me an ADSL modem to pair it with.

Cheers

While it will annoy WotDa..

Thompson SpeedTouch 546 v6.

Download the DMT Tool software, and force the BT Exchange to give you max speed :)

Picked mine up for £13 delivered online (reconditioned).

Cheers EVH I'll look into it - less than £15 sounds fantastic!
