Just Bought: Time Capsule - 500GB

Nice to see the latest Airport Extreme firmware supports using USB drives for Time Machine backups as well. They waited just long enough for people to sell their base stations and buy a Time Capsule before doing that.

Typical Typical Typical :p

The old age problem I had with Airport Extreme has now been fixed, good timing as I have just put my old Extreme and NAS up for sale! :p

Doesn't matter anyway, this Time Capsule is soooooo reassuring. I'm going to reinstall a-fresh soon so I can use it during the installation process to copy over my apps/tunes etc.

Glad I bought it.

Hey guys, just a quick update.

I decided today to give my system a clean install, as I never did one when it arrived with Tiger, and only did an upgrade when I got Leopard.

All went smoothly, if a bit slow. I got to the point where you can transfer files etc from an external source (i.e. Time Capsule). Did so, for which it took an mighty 6 hours!!

Although the long wait the system as is I left it, desktop picture, files & folders. Applications/Dock all the same.

So in that sense the machine is excellent!

Although I did see something I wasn't expecting. As well as Time Capsule I also use .Mac to sync Mail/Contacts/Bookmarks etc. All of which was transfered back once I signed into .Mac again.

But to my horror, it did not backup (Time Capsule or .Mac) my NTL mail? Only my .Mac email.

I had hundreds of emails, and some important ones? Mainly subscription details to licenses of Apps etc. Even though I cant think of any immediate effects, I'm pretty bummed out that it hasn't saved them?

Was talking to titchard on MSN, I guess I was expecting a HUGE speed increase etc, as this also came to light when I got back up running? I guess there is a slight increase, but not as he put it compared to a fresh Windows install.

All in all though, kinda glad I went through the whole process. Gone through the whole motion of Time Capsule, and even though it took 6 bloomin hours, it really shows you its importance!

Also worth pointing out too, after the first backup. The hourly and daily backups are not noticeable! Really good a keeping the system TOTALLY backed up!

:)

Another Update!

Didn't realize I had to re-install ALL of Apple's Updates (10.5.2 etc + about 20 different updates), then I tried Time Machine keeping open MAIL, and to my surprise it HAD saved my email, you must have to restore it manually. I feel a lot better now! :D 1645 Emails restored!

Nice review, i might look at picking one of these up at some point, maybie over the summer.

EDIT: Id wish they'd do a 750 as i dont think 500 will be enough and 1TB is prity damn expensive.

I don't want to sound nasty, but what is the point of doing a clean install and then restoring the entire OS from Time Machine?

Wouldn't it have been better to just import you user files, emails, apps etc.. and leave the spaghetti of OS files behind?

Perhaps this is why it doesn't seem faster.

To be honest EVH, you're probably right now that I have gone through the motions.

There is a slight increase, and I'm not just saying that to save face. :p

Although not as much as I thought it would be.

Oh well, atleast its all done and I'll put it down to experience - going through the whole data recovery process (for which Time Capsule is just fantastic at, if a little slow).

Another interesting point I came across is that although I did a fresh install of Leopard, it did infact leave my Boot Camp Partition intact, not affect at all.

Although this is my next idea, to wipe and reinstall Vista 32bit. (64bit display drivers just dont cut it in my games.)

Anyhoo - Another day in the life of PAC2008's crazy idea's.

:p

I think you would have been better to do a format-reinstall, and only restore your apps & data THEN create a backup.
