Just built a Q9300 what sort of temperature should I expect?

Currently using a Ninja Scythe Rev B heatsink my idle temperatures are:

53
54

Are these average, or should they be cooler?

They seem a little high to me.

Did you get those readings from the Core Temp application?

Currently using EVEREST. Just checked in Core Temp and they are the same.

Am I reading it right? ~42 is the temp? What is TJMAX?

I believe TJ Max is the maximum temperature that the processor can handle, or something along those lines (perhaps the temp at which throttling occurs to protect the cpu?).

Ahhh...

"Real Temp is a temperature monitoring program designed for all Intel single Core, Dual Core and Quad Core processors. Each core on these processors has a digital thermal sensor (DTS) that reports temperature data relative to TjMax which is the safe maximum operating core temperature for the CPU. As your CPU heats up, your Distance to TjMax will decrease. If it reaches zero your processor will start to throttle or slow down so maximizing your distance away from TjMax will help your computer run at full speed and more reliably too."

But what I don't get is why is mine so low? 50C is hardly hot for a busy CPU, why would it throttle my CPU on such a low temperature?

What case do you have and how many layers of thermal compound did you put on?

Doesn't really matter whether you use Core Temp or Real Temp. Averaging 42c in Real temp is just as bad as averaging 53c in Core Temp.

Just the normal amount as instructed by the Arctic Silver website (a strip horizontal across the CPU).

Running at about 42 idle now according to Real Temp which seems fine for a quad

I have the coolermaster CM690. It's a cheap case but it does the job.

Real Temp is almost always about 10c lower than Core Temp, mostly because it uses a Tj that's 10c lower than the one Core Temp uses. So you're still the same distance from the Tj.

I would say idle around the early 40's is fine for a quad, but it's the load temps that really matter. Try running prime95 smallFFTs for about 30 mins and see how the load temps are.

BIOS won't give you the core temps, and they are what we should be paying attention too.

BIOS tends to give a reading from the socket the CPU is in, coretemp/realtemp read from the cores of the CPU

Ok I'll do that tonight when I don't need to use my PC. Am I right in saying I need to run 4 Prime95 applications and then set each affinity for each core? Or can I just run one Prime95 application?
