just built. boot problem. power?HELP!

just built pc. it goes on for about 20 seconds doing all the usual things. after a little while it turns off. this happens everytime. any ideas?

my friend suggested unplugging certain things and trying it without them in. any other ideas?

i get a message whilst booting saying "cpu is unworkable or has been changed. please recheck cpu soft menu." is this normal as i'm using an old hard drive??

i unplugged the cable that goes from the power supply to 'atx12v1' on the motherboard.and the monitor does nothing but it stays on. any ideas?

yeah it has windows on it. and it can get to the bit where windows starts to load

if i press F1 it continues to load windows. if i dont press it it stays at another screen and then turns off at that point. sometimes it turns off after a few seconds.

would that explain how it doesn't turn off when i unplug the cable that goes to atx12v1

also remember that it turns off before windows trys to load.. so maybe a format isn't it?

if i unplug the hard drive then turn on it still turns itself off

changed ram to 2.0 seems to be worse now

not managed to get back to bios since changing

ok managed to get into bios . its deffinatly changed to 2.0

temps in bios seem low for the cpu

arg ok now cpu temp is around 80. the heatsink is on it ok all down tightly

didn't use paste. but the heatsink had three grey strips . the back of the cpu is all greasy.. so some paste stuff was already on it

took off heatsink. the paste is a big grey blurry blob on the cpu. set the bios all to fail safe settings.. is this default?
