Firstly thankyou to everyone who replied to my previous posts and helped me.

Went to overclockers today and picked up all the bits for my new system.

After not building a pc for many years, it went ok and powered up first time

Spec:

I5 3570K Ivybridge
8GB Geil Black Dragon
Gigabyte Z77X UD3H
Sapphire HD 6450 1GB
Seagate Barracuda 2TB
Akasa Venom nano cooler

I have installed windows 7 64 BIT and just installed CPU Z

Im concerned that something is wrong as the Core speed and multiplier is constantly changing on its own, ranging from 1800 mhz to 3800mhz and multiplier from 16 -38, is this normal???

Im not currently interested in playing the latest games, that is why a went for the 6450 but i would like to play around with a mild overclock. Obviously i want to get everything correct first.

Am i best doing the overclock in the bios?? or using the easy tune 6 software which came with it. and what do i change and to what ?? ;))

Thanks Mark

My 3570k is changing, so it's all normal (I hope so:D)
As for overclocking the graphics card, you want to download a program such as MSI Afterburner, Asus GPU Tweak or Sapphire Trixx.

that is normal. the CPU isn't going to run at a constant 3.4 GHZ if its doing nothing. Just putting unnecessary stress on itself. so it may droop to 1600mhz when idle / not much happening.

then you will ntoice the second you launch an app it shoots back to 3.8 ghz (watever you may be boosted too)

Thankyou both for the superquick replies !

I should have explained better, i mean i wish to overclock the CPU,just not sure which way to do it and what to change it to.

What should i comfortably be able to get the cpu to- using what settings
and what should i be able to get the gpu to??

Thanks again

Its called "speedstep" its normal.

If you click on the Tuner tab of easytune6 you will see a green/yellow and red button giving three different preset overclocks, pick one for a easy instant overclock.

Or there is a red bar called "autotune" which tests your system specifically and sets an overclock that it reckons is safe for your parts.

Thanks

Im learning all the time

One other thing im worried about is temperatures, the two fans which came with the corsair carbide 300r case and the venom on the cpu all seem to be running slowly, i obviouslt dont want to fry anything,

what is the PCH and is it too high???

Download "realtemp" and run it while stressing your CPU with something like Prime95 (which will also bring up an error if the PC is unstable).

if your overclocking the cpu i would be more worried about the cooling heatsink you have attached to the cpu. the fans around the case, althought helping provide a good airflow dont contribute to the coolness of your cpu that greatly. cpu fan around case tend to help keep good cool airflow around enitre case which does help cpu slightly but also helps keep all componants cool

what cpu heatsink do you have?

Some good advice there from stulid

another question, sorry. :)

Im just thinking whilst the Geil memory is on offer i buy another 8GB's worth.

Am i right in thinking that because im using 64bit windows 7 professional that 16gb of ram will work correctly??

Thanks

Windows Pro or Ultimate lets you use more than 16GB of RAM. 16GB is the limit on the home premium and lower licences have even less.
