Just canceled an Asus P5E order...Was I wrong?

Hi guys,

I have just canceled an Asus P5E order. Why? Because I felt that I wouldn't see any real difference from my Asus P5B Deluxe. I think I made the right choice. Apart from the 2x16 PCI-e which I will NEVER use is there any other benefit for a mild overclocker?
Currently running an Q6600 at 2,7GHz (from 2,4). I thought that with X38 there would be some speed improvements but after reading some reviews there is no speed difference at all.

I think you made the right choice by sticking with what you have. Unless you are pushing the bleeding limits of your chip then that upgrade would not have made a huge difference.

Ahh just noticed, the P5B is a P965 motherboard isn't it? There are some benefits to be gained from a P35 or X38 board in the memory controller and reduced power consumption of Northbridge and Southbridge. A P35 would give you all the benefits of these improvements for a much lower cost than the X38 boards.
 
imo you would only be talking a few % - just not worth the effort.
I would have thought that you should be able to squeeze some more out of your P5B/Q6600 than at present.

I've got the P5E on my shortlist at the moment and have just read a few reviews on it, looks like a nice mobo but not sure it offers me any useful extras over a P35 chipset.

I too am using the ASUS P5B-Deluxe but I'm selling it next week so trying to get a replacement lined up. I think the P5B series of mobos were released about 18 months ago now, I waited about 5-6 months after it was released before I bought mine, it had been through a few BIOS revisions by the time I got it and was totally rock solid.

Gonna spend a few hours now looking into this but unless anyone else chimes in I think the P35 is looking like the best choice. . .
 
Personally I cant find any real reason to upgrade to P35/X38 apart from a) high oveclocking, b) Crossfire, c)DDR3. Is the X38 or P35 faster than the P965 with DDR2 and Quads and if yes can anyone show me some benchmarks?
 
for maximim overclocking potential with a quad you want a P35 board, and if you need crossfire as well then X38 is the way to go.

for mild overclock like yours @ 2.7ghz there's really not much point.

I've used a P965 mobo the last year, its a cracker and there was no obvious reason to upgrade. I think about the only thing on the P965 that niggled me was the NB strap change thingie once you go past 400MHz-FSB. This doesn't happen on the newer chipsets. Apart from that small thing its a great chipset.

Luckily I got a perfect buyer for the P965 so I thought may as well buy the newer P35 board and have a play.

I don't think either of the new boards offer enough va-va-voom to seduce a P965 owner to upgrade, except for upgrades sake of course :)
 
965 won't handle high quad overclocks nor as high fsb with 4x1gb sticks.

p35/x38 are stronger boards but only if you need it :)
