Just completed Mafia *Spoilers*

I agree incredible game, to the OP your not alone only completed it last summer due to having a crap pc/couldn't complete the racing level when it was out originally. Looking forward to the sequel :)

The soundtrack is ace too!

I found it a bit boring myself some missions were just dull. I stoped when i had to steal a yellow roadster or somit i kept getting caught and just couldnt be bothered to play it anymore. Wasnt too bad in some areas tho. Definatly not like gta i thought which it was supose to be like i think.

Been a while since I have tried Mafia now and have to agree with pretty much everything quoted.

It seemed so slow, the physics were very unrealistic and the police (especially in the earlier part of the games) were very unforgiving and very hard to loose. To me the first part of the game is where you learn but being nabbed all the time was horrendous. It also seemed very slow on the driving parts.

I much prefer GTA how anyone can say this franchise is better I have no idea (especially when you think that Mafia 2 still hasn't been released but we've had a couple of GTA games in the same time period) which shows how popular it is.

I did try and like it because of the recommendations but it was just so tedious.

I'm the complete opposite to the above post, I loved everything about Mafia and the difficulty at the start was what kept me going. GTA I just found so boring after about an hour and I just ended up on a carnage spree.
I would love it if Mafia 2 came out and hopefully made as good as the first one and not just a fps game.

Im going to have another try with mafia, can anyone recommend any mods, like a graphics mod or something, with a link to it etc. Cheers. Also 1.2 is the latest patch yeah that fixes the intros gfx etc?

i loved this game. its just great. it gave me the same feeling the original driver game gave me.

i loved the atmosphere .

might pop it in the old dvd drive again one day.

Installed and patched but i get a popup askin for me to get a indeo codec, Which says go to http://indeo.ligos.com. but they no longer support it and its not free. Anyone got a link to the codec needed. Bit suprised klite codec pack didnt have it like.

what i loved about mafia is how reaslitic it was, unlike gta. i loved how you had to stick to a speed limit and if you broke it a little bit you get a ticket (:D) or if you were way over the limit then one police would chase you, which eventually would leed to many police chassing you, which eventually led to them shooting you. same with going through a red light and hitting a car/pedestrian.

also loved how with shotting you couldn't be the almightest god killing everyone easily, depending on where you shot the person it ciould take quite a few to take someone out, but if more then one person was there you'd actually be getting shot and have to hid rather then just run striaght into them and destory them with everyone else that existed like gta.

the levels were fantastic, music, characters, cars all best i have ever experienced.

loved the little scripted events, like running down an alley and seeing some guy waiting on a date, then the other end the girl waiting for him, seeing people peeing, getting on the monorail with paulie and everyone getting on and off, getting on the bus thing, seeing people calling for taxis.

also loved how levels like killiing morelo (sp?) youy could do it many ways, ie take down the airplane, bump him off the road and kill him, i remember i could easily do the airplane route but decided it would be more fun trying to kill him before he reached the airport, so i spent hours and hours tying to get it just right until eventually idid, i managed to shoot the driver causing the car to go crazy and crash. then everyone jumped out of the car who survided the crash and we jumped out of our car having a shoot out eventually winning.

really cannot wait for the next game going to be so much fun

Yes I agree with most people, the driving etc was much more enjoyable in Mafia than GTA, it had realistic ish handling ( poor brakes & cornering @ speed), you lost health when u hit something @ high speed, slow acceleration ( lol the poorest cars had trouble getting up the bridge from standstill :D.) and you had to keep to traffic laws :D.
Action was nice and though too.

Quite liked the physics too, every dust bin could be dmaaged in random places.
And car damage was nice too, loved shooting off the wheels or hitting the car with a bat a few hundred times and see it deform where I hit it:p.

Bought it for about 5 quid a couple of years back. Tried it, got pretty bored quickly. Gave up after about half an hour then forgot about it til I saw this.

I also completed this last week for the second time. The racing mission isn't that bad, i did it second try, although I remember it causing a little more difficulty last time round. In fact they all seemed more difficult first time round.

yeah the racing mission was a bit of a bugger, i eventaully managed to complete it normally without the patch after around the 30th time, maybe more. was very rewarding to have completed it. once the patch was released it became too easy, plus the cheat made it even easier.

what as everyones favorite level? i had many so making it hard to choose one, the mansion one was pretty decent killing everyone one or being super quiet with no one noticing you were there. What i loved about that level aswell was that even after like my fourth time playing the whole game tthough i was still learning new things about it, ie that you can get the guy with you to teach you how to steal the limo out back.

may faovrite probably was the whore/rooftops/priest level. just when you think you are finished there was more to do, was really great. only grip with that level is it made you want to spend all day jumping from one roof top to the other in freeplay but you couldn't.

ahh just remember the only tiny small part about mafia. the story was not interlinked with freeplay mode. Would have been cool to be able to just take a day off a go for a stroll whilst diong the story, although would have been difficult to add the kill gangsters get money thing but maybe they could have left that out i don't know. what this wouyld have allowed though is for the city ot change as you go thorugh the story, so say before killing morello if you go to his bar there is his cars always there, but after killing him no longer will he be there, or like after blwoing up the hotel in the whore if you go there is it burnt for a while.

Not a bad game but as I mentioned on here a couple of years back after completing it, I don't rate it as highly as most.

The graphical design, sound and storyline all work well to create a good atmosphere, but the actual gameplay itself is a bit lacking in places. Often you have to do long, boring drives and then some distinctly average combat when you get to wherever you are going (compared to say, Max Payne). There's also a really annoying bug (well, poor scripting probably) on the Harbour level towards the end where you have to move some boxes around, dude just starts sounding the alarm even though I'm helping him, some **** like that.

Overall I think Mafia is a good example of style over substance, it's a very slickly presented game with a cinematic feel to it, but when you distill it down to the raw ingredients, neither the driving nor the combat is all that exciting most of the time. Heck, I got so fed up with the taxi missions near the start that I actually gave up on the game and didn't touch it again for nearly 3 years :)

As for my favourite mission, the abandoned prison was pretty cool. Also the farmhouse with the rain pouring down, that was cool.

Driving is not boring :(:(:(.

Infact in mafia I've prolly spent most time racing around fleeing from the cops in a fast car and doing the race mission.
In all othergames I'm the same, in Vice I drive around on my bike on rooftops, in SA I drove around in anything in the desert and on the countryside, and in gta 3 I used to race down between the 3 islands.

Driving roxx, unless you have to drive for 2 hours between the start and end of the game I'll never get tired of driving around pointlessly :D.

Oh yes, Mafia! Played it quite a few years ago and thought it was one of the best games ever at the time. And still ranks up there. :D

Yeh really hope the second one lives up to the first.

Oh, and driving sensibly is what makes the game more realistic and the story was so involving.
