Just connected to O2... omgomgomgomgomgomg

im on be* (practically o2) and after the training period your optimal SNR profile is found.
with be* you can open a support ticket to change the SNR depending on if you need more speed or more stability, hopefully the same applies to o2.
you can also tweak your local SNR with modified firmware for your router or the DMT tool for your router.

Yeah can go up and down all the time, my profile goes from 4500 to 5000 nearly every week, one day i can be downing just over 500k, next i can be doing about 560k, been on the 5000 profile for about 4 days now, so its holding a bit longer this time, but it will drop back to 4500 at some point though :p, but it doesn't bother me as the drop in speed isn't that big. :)

If it's o2 it's using Be's ADSL 2+ service rebadged, so it doesn't really have a 'training period' or make use of BRAS profiles in the same way as BT's ADSL Max service. The speed goes up and down all the time and you always get whatever speed you're connected at.

edit: Thought they do use line managment for two weeks. Apologies for the misinformation.

Wait, i'm confugled... does the two week training period set a permanent max speed for your line or not? Does the potential for your line to get faster never stop even after this two week period? Is it a completely different system to MAX? Why am I starting to grow hairs by my winky? What is the meaning of life? *Head explodes*

Please answer all but the last two questions.

Lol :)

Be's training period is completely different to the training period used in ADSL Max.

What happens is that during the two week period, Be will change your line settings (target SNR, etc) to what they believe to be 'optimal'. There is no 'profile' beyond this so you always get whatever speed your're connected at, which can vary at any time at all, depending on your line conditions.

With an IPStream ADSL Max service, the training of the line sets the BRAS profile and usually limits your throughput to somewhere below whatever you're sync'd at (e.g. sync'd at 7750 kbits/sec and it'll limit your throughput to 7500). This can change as your line goes down (they'll drop the limit) or if it stays up at a high SNR for a long time (it may go up). This takes some time though.

...hope that clears things up a little.

Well if that's true then I am even more over the moon than I was previously! To test the theory I just disconnected then reconnected my modem and am now back up at 3800kbs. I love ADSL2! :D

However this O2 wireless box sucks harder than Briana Banks for some pretty major reasons:
  • It has WEP only, you can't configure it for anything else and the key is pre-set and comes with the box.
  • Port forwarding is nigh-on impossible, I can't see any simple way to open them up and get uTorrent working as it should. It has a "Game & Application Sharing" section but I can't see anything relevant in it.
  • All features are so badly castrated it's only for the dirtiest and filthiest of noobs.
Think i'll buy a fully fledged Netgear DG834G asap.

Just got the following email from O2:

Dear Mr Extraordinarily Good Looking,

We've tested your connection, and it's good news.

Just a note to say that testing is now complete on your O2 Broadband connection, and great news it has confirmed your package suits your line.

With everything now in place, we hope that you enjoy your O2 Broadband experience.

If you have any questions please visit www.o2.co.uk. Or you can give us a call on 0800 230 0202 free from a landline, or drop the first zero to call free from an O2 mobile.

Best regards

The O2 Broadband Team.

So much for the 14 day period then, more like 3 days! :D

It supports WPA / WPA2 with any key you want, heh.

Just go to the Wireless Tab and click Configure...

Ok ok, maybe it's a little sad that i'm THIS excited, but I have what anyone would deem a crappy line. I have had a 2MB fixed ADSL line now for about a year and a half that topped out at 220kb/s and that was rock stable. However, I had previously tried ADSL MAX a while back with a crummy company and found it to be shockingly unstable... and that was with a Belkin 7633 router with the broadcom chipset, known for being good with bad/long lines. It could have just been a tragic ISP, but it made me re-consider ever using anything but regular fixed ADSL on my line.

However a couple of weeks back I then decided to re-try MAX using ADSL24, which to be fair are an awesome ISP, and found it a much better experience than previously. I topped out at a 2.5MB profile speed and seemed to hit around 280kb/s. So far, so good.

I then thought "Meh what the hell, lets go with O2" as I have a phone contract with them and it is dirt cheap. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting but it was nothing close to this! I have just done a speed test and got a download speed of 411kb/s and upload of 100kb/s... 3300kbs/800kbs respectively... (the router itself reports 3800kbs/980kbs) and while that may not seem much to some of you, it's effectively 2x the speed i've been getting for a loooong time, and is way beyond my intial expectations. I'm using the O2 wireless Box II (effectively a re-branded Netgear DG834G).

I'm just praying my line manages to hold this speed throughout the "testing" phase of the contract. :D

Hey man,

It's actually a rebadged Thomson 585v7

If you want access to all the features login as the Super User

Username: SuperUser
Pass: O2Br0ad64nd

Also, we currently dont use the DLM that Be* do.

Have a look at the linksys WAG54GS mate they seem to be very good on long lines and they do all the portforwarding and stuff.........

I have a Linksys WAG200 going spare at home... reckon this uses the same chipset?

It supports WPA / WPA2 with any key you want, heh.

Just go to the Wireless Tab and click Configure...

Ahh need to log in as below then I presume.

Well bugger me, so it is! Will try that logging on as super user later on, cheers for the info. Still going to get a Netgear though I think. :)
