I'm pretty unfit at the moment, suffered a bad back for years which took it's toll on my muscles/strength as I stopped doing pretty much everything.

I'm also pretty scrawny which is down to not eating enough which I'm trying to resolve. So far to ease myself into things I'm just swimming for the moment, I go every other day except this week I have gone everyday. I am currently swimming 800M each session (just breast stroke)

I need a good plan of attack to put weight on and gain muscle, that means training and diet. I do eat healthy already just not enough.

Any advice?

Edit, Probably should have put this in the main section, Please move if mods come across this.

Stronglifts.

+1

What equipment does your gym have? Check the form guides (page 1 of the gym rats thread) and do the big compound lifts with proper form for strong backs ;)

It has pretty much everything I think, Pace health club is where I have joined.

It has a room with what looks like just weights, another room with cardio stuff and what looks like resistance based machines for muscle building and pool, sauna and steam room.

I'll take a look at that thread and see what I can manage, last time I did weights i did too much and my arms were in agony and I couldn't move for a week lol

That's not "too much", that's just from lifting weights for the first time. Even now if I take a week or two off and go to the gym, I'll be horrendously sore for a good few days. If you're consistently training, it's not bad at all :)

Be humble :) seriously, I see guys smaller than me struggling with heavier weights than I lift, and I think they'll never grow. It's much better to be lifting the lightest weight in the room knowing that you'll progress, then letting your ego take over, ramp the weight up and forever be stuck in a rut :)

I hope so lol, when I say I couldn't move i really mean just that, I just couldn't move my arms at all. I'm starting weights next week so I'll see how it goes and take it from there.....Can't wait :)

I've been going to my local leisure centre gym since March and after the first visit I couldn't even move the steering wheel of my car. Started strong lifts a few weeks ago and could barely walk for a good few days. It gets easier.

Only advice I can give is watch your back. Work on form. I'm struggling not to arch my back at the mo.

How long did it take you to get your abs?

I don't have abs :p

Muscles are always there, they are just bigger or smaller. Muscles like abs only become visible when you're at lower bodyfat though. So you can have 22" arms and no abs at 22% bodyfat, or have 14" arms but a six pack at 9% bodyfat.

Hence the saying "abs are made in the kitchen" :)
