If you hold it with the bright end at the bottom of your grip and the handle resting easily on your shoulder as the perp approaches you can turn the torch on blinding him then in an easy elbow swing, like when you use an atl atl you can bring the handle down on his head, fight won without even having to take up a stance.
Sorry to hear of your strife op, I hope it ends here but stay extra alert, your bag of dog poo could come in handy too.
Legally that's not how it works (thank god). They had not attacked or threatened you, so you would be completely liable for your dog attacking them.

You could have at least reported the incident so its on record. You said you smacked one of them so the chances are there will be a youth walking about today with a black eye / bruised cheek or something. If you saw someone like that in daylight you'd maybe be able to add to the report. Whining about it online won't help anyone. At least if you report it if it happens again and you can identify any of them there will be a bit of history rather than just a one off incident.
OP probably best to change your dog walking route or timing for a few days or if you don't have that option try not to go along or in the dark.
I would report it because they way I see thing there is a 17 "youf" out there today with hurt pride, he picked on someone and got a smack in process in front of his mates! You can bet that all night they were taking the mick because they are idiots and do that. So he may be hell bent on seeking revenge and trying to restore pride. And that could have potentially dangerous consequences.
Also they could target someone else thinking it was you and hurt them. Best all round if you at least speak to the Police about it. If it was an honest 1v8 and you acted in self defence then you will be fine and chances are if they may be known to the Local Force if they are indeed "local scum".

You do realise that defining yourself is not assault? If you are attacked you are fighting for your life. You can get away with using a good amount of reasonable force.

also as suggested i would change your routine of your dog walk as if its in a area like mine for eg you would be getting a payback style attack. hopefully your area isn't like mine and its a random occurrence with silly boys.
That's the dog I wanted, but dad in his wisdom decides to get a Springer Spaniel/Staff cross breed that chews on your hands when it's happy to see anyone
Though I do blame my sister for rough housing with it at only 9 weeks old
I like dogs such as Tibetan Mastiff, German shepard but these dogs aren't for everyone, as you need to know how train them. Shame, I've no time or big enough garden for a dog like this...
My parents were thinking of buying a smaller dog, but my dad really wants Great Dane or Newfoundland.
