Just got back from a job 'interview'.

The Jobcentre gave me a job that fitted my criteria and basically ordered me to go for it.
I filled out the sheet and eventually received a phone call asking me to be available the following day for a phone interview :eek:
Is this how its done now?
After the interview they told me it would be 4 weeks before they got back in touch but 3 days later (yesterday) they asked if I could go in for an interview this morning that would take 2.5 hours.
I went and bought a shirt & tie last night and looked quite smart this morning.
I also spent at least 5 mins memorising the company, products, goals and catching up on Lean Machining processes.
The 'interview' lasted 50 mins which consisted of an English & Maths test but no verbals :(
Anyway, I flew through the tests and going by the page turning I heard from the other 5 candidates I shouldn't have a problem getting to the next interview.
The only problem I've got is that I don't really want the job.

How job interviews have changed since I were a lad.
Forgot to mention that the very first thing I had to do was hand my passport in to show I had a right to be here.

Lets be honest, the company was advertising through the job centre and people on benefits were being told to go for it. Why would a company do full interviews with a load of people they have no intention of employing, they are sifting through the crap and will interview what cream there is of the unemployed crop.

Lets be honest, the company has no idea where I applied from because the job is advertised in several places.
68 people applied for the job and they need a way to whittle it down to 15 applicants very quickly.

Why don't I want the job? :
I've done that exact job for 33 years and want a change and I think I deserve the right.
However, if by some miracle I do get offered the job I will take it because it'll be like water off a ducks back.

At least it would be something that would tide you over and it could give you the oppurtunity to keep looking for a new role?

at least its a job and you can still look for something else. like you said it will be like duck taking to water.

You are currently unemployed arn't you? Are you on jobseekers? Wouldn't it be better to take the job (Which I know you said you would) then try to look for a different job once your working. What happended to the youth offenders thing you were doing?
 
Take the job. Any jobs better then no job...

Are you receiving benefits?

I felt really ashamed when I was out of work lol, hated it, found a job and went with it :)

If their filtering system is good enough you should really end up as one the leading candidates... would be interesting to see really !!
 
Take the job, Im not being silly but I seriously think that people that sponge off society should be forced into work, like prisoners in chain gangs in USA. That way they have to work for there £40 a week. Society would then have clean streets and stuff.

It then might spure them on to take that phone centre/factory/tesco/Mc D's job!

Im not suggesting you are a sponge, after 33 years your owed "some reflecting time". This is more aimed at lay-about school drop outs.

They had to let me go because of Health & Safety/Safeguarding issues with being the only volunteer they've ever taken on.
However, they told me they were pleased with what I had done and to apply for jobs.
Wednesday was the closing date for a job that some people from the prison thought was aimed at me in the job description 'Must have had recent experience'.
At the moment they will be looking through the applications and hopefull I'll get a phone call.
This is the job I really want.
 
get job, look for another career and persue that.

my dad is in the same position. 2 years rambling on about wanting a new career and doing nothing about it other than sit infront of the tv and mope when he could be looking on the job centre/monster.co.uk websites etc. really annoyed me because now he hasnt got a job and has the free time - he's applied for the same job he was doing before! IF your serious about a new career you shouldnt let your a job stop you from looking into another career.
 
I'm in a similar position; got an interview for a job I'm likely to get, but I don't really want the job. I figure if I do it, at least I'll get £7/hour, which is better than not getting £7/hour. It's a very low wage though so it's really just a stop-gap until I find a job that I really want (e.g. anything web programming related).
 
I'd take the job too tbh. I don't really like doing what I do for a living either.

The only reason I would refuse it would be if I had something else lined up as a definite. It looks worse on your CV if you job hop or keep changing your career path though.
