Just got me a PS3 :)

You wouldn't belive the difference when blown up on a large screen. On my 32" tv there isn't a huge amount in it, but with my projector the SD version looks absolutely awful. The difference really couldn't be more obvious - it's like comparing something on youtube to a decent dvd.

True enough.

From fairly close up on my 40" screen, it looks waaaaay better.
From the other side of the room however, and it's harder to see the difference... though the outside long shots still look obviously better.

V1N.

Yeah, I hate to be a digital snob, but I can't go back to SD after watching blu-ray films. It is like night and day to me. I do have to laugh at people claiming to see improved quality going from DVD to Blu-ray on their SDTV sets though...

that is taking it a bit far lol. sd is more than fine for most movies. indeed i still buy sd dvd's, only getting those the really benefit from HD on bluray/hd-dvd

There are other benfits - richer blacks, better colours, contrast etc - but yeh, without a HD set it defeats much of the point.

I'm replacing everything with HD now. Looking forward to Carlito's Way, Blade Runner and Pan's Labyrinth :)

Having played about with my mates PS3, who still uses a SDTV, I can say you do get a better picture with Blu-ray on SDTV sets over DVD, especially if the DVD was a poor transfer.

You can try a similar thing on your PC. Download a HD trailer and set your screen resolution to 800*600. It will look much better than a DVD, which is of similar resolution (720×576).

Ok so the difference is not huge, but there are improvements. I'll agree it is rather pointless without a HDTV set though :)
