Managed to get work to buy me a new 17" MacBook Pro and after ordering it nearly two weeks ago it's finally arrived. 2.93Ghz C2D, 4GB DDR3 and 320GB 7200rpm HDD, and I got the antiglare screen coating too.

So far I love it, I've been using a 15" screened laptop until now but didn't really appreciate how much bigger the 17" would be, still I'm not exactly a small person, and it weighs about the same as my last machine.

Being a work machine I'm not looking for any games or other such apps, but are there any particularly useful/productive apps anyone uses, ssh, ftp other utilities, that kind of thing, I had a quick browse of macupdate.com but there's so much there.

I'd say quicksilver. Very nice and clean app. I have it sit in the menu bar instead of the Dock. Try it and see what you think.

I use Cyberduck (free) for FTP. A lot of other apps I would have recommended wouldn't have been work-related unfortunately.

I recommend you get some damn pics up also. :p

Thanks guys, I'm liking quicksilver and Cyberduck, here's a pic for Slogan showing my MBP next to my EEE901

The anti glare coating on the screen is a misnomer, the option is actually a built to order version with the matte screen out of the previous generation 17". Hence the silver surround.

That'll explain why it took a week to build and ship out of china :) Apart from the coating is there technically much difference between the screens?

Nope, they both are LED backlit 1920x1200 screens. The glass screen with the black surround provides arguably deeper contrast and richer colours. However with that you get massive amounts of glare and a mirror. I'd go for a matte screen everytime, and find it absolutely bizarre what Apple have done.

Apple are more and more just marketing their products at the lifestyle segment. Now with the "anti-glare" screen only available on the 17" they are forcing graphic professionals to spend a lot more just to get the matte screen. Luckily there are still a few of the previous generation 15" versions (new and boxed) about that can be had for some real bargains (with higher specs than the entry to mid level new models.)
