Just got Vista, whats necessary?

I cannot comment muc on XPs early days... I got it very early, but I was so happy with 2K that I was loathed to upgarde and yes, I had a hard time doing it... When I did eventually upgrade to XP, thats what I did at first... Upgrade rather than fresh install and I am happy to say that I dont think I had a single issue with XP? - At least at this momnent in time, I cannot remember having any?

Yes, XP is basically 2K with knobs on while Vista is a whole different ball game, I can acceopt that, but only to a point... Vista still uses a hell of a lot of 2K/XP Drivers so its not as seperate as many seem to claim it is... Kind of like how so many people still think that Windows ME does not have DOS and is based on NT?

I fully agree with you that Vista is a lot better at 6 months than XP was, I myself didnt like XP purely on the eye candy and no other fair reason, and when I did move up, I found no compatibilty problems at all, and everythign I had, run fine on XP and in fact, better on XP than on 2K in many cases. With Vista, Im finding a lot of software does not run... Most of the stuff is silly non-essential stuff I accept that, but its essential to me. I have spent a lot of money on some of my apps and thn to find that they wont work full under Vista is starting to annoy me like hell.

Good old DOS days? hell, showing our ages arent we?

Final statement on there... Vista is new and will only get better.. .This is true. And its also why many users have no intention of going to Vista until its SP comes out... Same as what happened with XP, and no doubt the same will happen in future releases of Windows.

Yep showing my age but DOS does bring back fond memories.Personally I don't see VISTA SP1 making a lot of difference to Vista in regards to stability, sure it'll have minor bug fixes etc...I'm looking forward to drivers bringing more of an improvement down the road then SP1,Nvidia for example are only just starting to work on performance part of their Vista drivers.

I just get annoyed sometimes seeing another Vista sucks post, when there is no call or need for it.

what on earth is folding at home? i hear time and time again

cheers

Basically, its folding proteins, ( or at least rather than doing millions of tests in a test tube, they are doing it virtually on PCs ) and this can help to find such things as cures for diseases and so on...

This should show you the light...

Oh, I dont know...

On my XP64 PC, I have intergrated SP2 ( Which is a fairly recent SP release for XP64 ) and I found a fair number of improvements over SP1... Most notable, is that I have found that the suplied ATI drivers are so good and fast, that I have not bothered to install the Catalysts at all, and that PC is playing games faster than it ever has, and some games by a fair margin too!

Maybe SP1 for Vista will be a serious improvement over stock Vista... Too many people have had complaints about Vista foir there not to be a load of fixes and compatibility issues... I mean, for the biggest PC supplier in the world to turn around and tell MS to back off, must also count for something surely.

Again, this is not so. There are many many Vista users out there that are loving every minute of it and are finding that vista is perfect for them, and their systems.
There are also many users out there that are sorry that they ever touched the thing, and 10 times as many that are happy to use it but have to put up with some issues or another.

I will give you my own examples on my own PCs...

MSI Neo2 - X2-3800 - BFG6600GT - 4x512MB Samsung3200
Installs and then fails ( Screen blanks and then it Resets ) shortly after I enter my username and password for the first time. I then enter another name, but can happily log on as the first name and delete the second name I entered... It has done this on all 3 times I have installed Vista onto that PC.

Asus A8N-SLI - Opt144 & x2-4400 - Gigabyte 6600GT - 2x512MB Corsair TwinX4400
This PC Im sure had the 4400 when I installed it, and it was flawless in every respect... I later tried the Opty and it was fine and ran a beauty. The HD started going silly ( Raptor ) and eventually I removed the HD but put XP back on.

MSI Neo4 - Opty144 + Leadtek 6800GT
Again, a nice enough PC, however, after about 6 days of use, it had still not managed to give me a rating and it kept shutting down... Nto too much of an issue as I only used the PC for about an hour or so a day anyway... Never had the shutting down before or since, but with Vista, it did.

I have once again, as of today, put Vista onto a PC and its the Neo2 Setup and I have used the 4400 and the BFG6600GT ( Have to cos its AGP ) and once again, it failed and I had to enter two users again. Done nothign else but thats how it is on that PC...

Will have another play in an hour or so but that PC is most definitely NOT vista friendly at all... Dont know why?

Wich vista: x64/x86?

Also noticed all your pc's are amd's with nforce chipset, tried on a diff chipset or even an intel cpu?
I think it's the chipset, makes most sence, messed the hdd on the nforce controller, etcetc...

Didn't have problems with vista YET, but then again I've only had vista for 2 days and only tried vista x64 on my own pentium system... Perhaps I'll try on my dads a64 4000+.

Yeah, most of my PCs are NForce jobs... Have been since I got my first NF7S TBH.

Ok, do I have any NON-NForce Mobos???

Oh, yeah, the DS3's and the P5GDI... They are Intel.
Wait, I got a crossfire Mobo the other week... Thats an Intel... But...

Ok, the DS3 is XP64 and is running sweet as a nut and its my main box, so I wont be using that. The S3 has the [email protected] in there and thats now in the Wifes internet box ( Bloody internet box at 4.7Ghz = OTTFFS! ) and its got 2KPro on and she loves it as it is and wont let me touch it, so its only the P5GD1 and thats a DDR PC with a cruddy Celeron in it... Be a bit iffy to go for Vista on that dont you think? - even at best, if it goes on perfectly fine, its still going to be worse than my slowest AMD.

Erm, its only the one AMD its poor on too! - all *** rest are fine.

the problem is, that most of my Mobos are SATA and my only spare IDE Card seems to conflict with them... The only one it does not conflict with is the NEO2 and I have 2x400GB IDE HDs that will otherwise be going to waste.

Id love to have them in the DS3, but for some strange reason, if I use an ID Ecard in them, they act weird.... For example... I have an ITE8212 in the DS3 right now, and with a couple of DVDRW Drives, its just fine, btu if I add a HD, then it wil not let me into the BIOS????

The SIL680 is the same... Ok with DVDRW but with a HD, I cannot boot from SATA??? - ARGH! - so, the Neo2 is the only board I got thats any cop, and that lets me have IDE and SATA Drives and my 3 DVDRW Drives too!

So, anyway, what I am tryign to say is that the Neo2 seems to be my only "Current" choice of Mobo to use at this time.

Oh, and for what its worth, I reinstalled Vista on it a couple of hours ago... I just went back up to it and its got a corrupt registry? Bummer.

Once again, its doing me in this thing is.

I am thinking that its the HD ( Raptor ) one minute but under XP, it works fine ( Once I reformat it to kill of the Vista made Partition ) but as soon as Vista touches it... Poops itself.
However, the Maxtor 40GB and the Seagate 80GB, both did similar thigns too, and those are both IDE... I have tried them on a Serillel adapter too just on the off-chance but that didnt help?

Has anyone here got Vista Ultimate 32Bit onto a Neo2 Platinum??? if so, how?

how do you put up with it, fat rakoon? every single subsection on this forum is full of your threads* of tales of woe with various hardware and software. if i was you i would have set fire to to all my pc stuff and i'd probably watch the tv instead. never in my life have i seen one person with so many computing related problems..... :p

*ok, slight exaggeration but your name certainly sticks in my mind

Vista rocks. Don't listen to pessimists who can't say even one thing positive about it.

Corrupt registries  I'd sort my **** out before installing an OS if those types of serious problems happened to me.

I know. its awful isn't it?

Ok, firstly, on that note, while there are a hell of a lot of people answering and helping, and to those people, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, however, there are also a hell of a lot of people on these forums that only want to **** others down, and so, a lot of my posts are also down to me just giving up on one question, and posting the same question in a different way.

Secondly, my main PCs are all running absolutely brilliantly, I have never seen BSODs or even had so much as a sneeze from most of them... Running 13 PCs as I am doing, I do get issues with the lesser ones and I dont have the patience with them all. Recently, with trying out Vista ( I have Business and Ultimate ) I have gone through most of my PCs to try and find one that runs Vista perfectly and yes, I have found a number of them that run it great, however, I am wanting to settle on the Neo2 as this has all my biggest IDE Drives ( The other PCs now are all SATA ) but it seems to have some issues in that it trashes itself after just a day. Thats got nothing to do with me, but some update / driver thats causing this surely.
My main PC is a DS3 with 4x1GB Geil RAM, and an E6300 that normally runs at 2.8Ghz ( 400FSB ) but as of last night, I threw it back up to 500Mhz and has been there since and has no problems.

Thirdly, if I had only had 1, 2 or even only half a dozen PCs then no, you would never see me on these forums.... But I dont. I deal with PCs all day, and by the time I get home, my head is firmly wedged up my rear end, and the last thing I give a damned about is to try to work out why one of my own PCs isnt working properly, and so, I will often ask here, or a forum that will give me straight answers instead of **** me down all the time.
