After 3 years of the landlord paying £90/month for our NTL he's now cancelled his contract so I've had to get my own. Just calculated that we've had just over £3200 worth of free TV, phone and broadband out of him!

We decided to stick with Virgin as it's so much easier to just have the one bill and we've been very happy with the service. The missus has always wanted a PVR and having just got a new LCD TV I fancied some HD content, so we decided to go for the £35/month V+ package.

We had to pay a £45 installation fee (normally £150 but it's half price at the mo, and then they give you another £30 off for ordering online) and I'm glad it was so cheap because it only took the engineer 20 minutes as we already had all the cabling in place.

First impressions of the V+ box is that it's big and ugly! It could certainly look a bit sleeker. It feels quite cheap on the outside and the display on the front looks like a 80's calculator. The remote is much better though with a rubberised backing and large well-spaced buttons. There's a few button's which could be in better locations but that's a moot point for me though as I'll be using a Logitech Harmony remote anyway.

The V+ box is a very good SD upscaler. SD TV with our old STB (silver Samsung one) looked pap on my LG 37" LCD. The V+ box takes the badly compressed signals which seem to be becoming more common nowadays and does a good job of turning them into something of a much better quality. The higher bitrate channels such as BBC, ITV and C4 look almost as good as HD which I was very impressed with. HD-wise there is only BBC HD at the moment, but the engineer advised that C4 HD and Sky Sports/Movies HD will be online by the end of the month. There's quite a bit of on-demand HD content available which all looks very nice on a big telly.

The software on the box is slow unfortunately, but anyone who's used NTL/Virgin before should be used to this. Navigating through the EPG can be a slow process sometimes. The V+ PVR features are very easy to use though..even my gf has picked them up already. There's a few things I'd like it to be able to do which it can't at the moment (such as recording a time-delayed program, or recording the whole of a program start to finish after the start of the program, which Sky+ can do apparently).

Overall I'm one happy customer and thought I'd share the fact! If there's anything you'd like me to test out on the V+ box then just give me a shout.

Andy

I asked him when we can expect more HD channels and his exact words were "End of the month for C4 and Sky Movies and Sport". Which month he was talking about I cant be sure of :D

That would be frigging awesome. THe only other thing I want them to do other than speed the damn box up, is get the red button working on Sky Sports so we can watch the game we want when they have multiscreen games.

I just cant see it....Why would sky give up control of their most valuable channels?

nice to see an honest and fair appraisal. Too many V+ owners are deluded as to the sky/ntl box's failings and think Sky is the enemy and is inferior in every way.

im not saying the sky box is perfect, but its refreshing to see an impartial assesment of the V+ :)

Is the £45 installation fee the only cost? Theres 2 standard VM STBs in the house that will be replaced soon with V+, you think they may cut us a deal with installation if we have 2 installed? Cant negotiate things like that online though!

Yep £45 is it, although the half price offer expires at the end of Jan so you need to be quick (unless they decide to extend it). You don't pay for the V+ box as you "rent" it as part of your monthly payment. Cancel your contract and they'll come and take the box off you.

You can still get the £30 online discount over the phone but it will be processed as an account credit rather than a discount on the installation fee. You may possibly have trouble getting a second V+ box though. If I remember correctly the old NTL billing system doesn't have the ability to add a second box to the account. Old Telewest areas are ok though. That problem may have been fixed by now though as that was sometime last year.

I very much doubt movies and sport will be arriving on HD by the end of the month, I thought C4HD isnt on there atm due to not enough room or bandwidth (feel free to correct me) So there is surely very little chance that it can fit movies and sport, thats also not taking into account that its skys channels. Unless virgin are launching their own channels, but again its comes down to space/bandwidth. Engineers always seem to make things up, the amount of threads on avforums where sky engineers have said for example "they are allocating all 300gb of hardrive for recordings" or "the sata port at the back is already enabled" Its all rubbish but I wish it were true.

What HD channels are there other than BBCHD? I can't find any - feels like a bit of a rip!!!

None, you get BBCHD and the only other HD content is movie rentals (which need to be paid) and also if you search though the menus there are HD series and programmes (which are free) cant remember everything on there but I know lost season 1 & 2 included.

BBCHD has gone massivly downhill recently, there has been no HD football for months even though BBC1 has the game on, they cut HD movies over christmas and the sheduled hours seem to be getting shorter. Think its down to budget cuts...

Would be interesting to know if the live sd BBC FA Cup matches are on HD also... but I was on the HD terrestrial trial last year and while it was good - it ended up being repeat after repeat and even then it was only for a 6 hours a day or so

The live FA cup matches are not on BBCHD, even though they were last year and have always been since launch. As mentioned above there has been no live HD football on BBC for months, even when the game is on BBC1. Occasional football was the only redeeming feature of BBCHD and now without it(as you mentioned) its just repeats or period dramas. Thankfully they have announced that EURO 2008 will be shown on BBCHD.

Im looking to get rid of my media center pc. Do you reckon the SD upscaling would be anything like the TV upscaling I get via purevideo (which is very nice).

Also my TV just has DVI, will it work ok through that, or will component 720p look ok?

Oh, and does it us HDCP? (As my TV isnt fully compatible with it I dont think)

I've never seen purevideo upscaling so couldn't tell you how it compares sorry, but I'm still very impressed with how well the V+ box works. I need to be sat about 6 foot back from my 37" TV to get the full benefit (otherwise things can look slightly blocky) but luckily enough that's just where I sit :)

My TV is only 720p so you should be fine connecting it up over component. Your problem will be that you can't view most HD movies or on-demand programmes via component as it doesn't support HDCP. You could connect things up via HDMI and a DVI adaptor but if your TV doesn't support HDCP either then you're going to have a very bland V+ experience!

Well it supports `some` HDCP, but it had issues with SkyHD (so I read on forums) I think its HDMI 1.1 compliment and not 1.2 or something.

Well I'm going to give media center a while longer, see if I can iron out the annoyances, but V+ does look tempting.

Sounds a good offer, £45 for a V+ box :) ill give them a call today and see if they will give it for that price, there sales always seem random if you get it or not.
