Just installed Arctic cooler for 9800pro, but not sure about it...

...Can anyone else with one give me some piece of mind and answer my questions below as I'm not convinced by this contraption one little bit at the moment?

I didn't like fitting it one bit. Found it a little difficult to get the card over the heatsink pegs, but got there in the end.

1: I'm presuming if I'd damaged the card in any way my PC wouldn't have booted?

I'm not convinced about the warm air coming out of the back of it, or more to the point, the lack of it.

2: I was expecting a blast of hot air out of the case, but it's merely a warm trickle. Is this normal? The card is hot to the touch (I only touched the edge) but it's always been like that so I'm presuming it's normal

The first time I ran a 3dmark 2001se to test it, 3dmark came up with a fatal error, stating it couldn't initialise the card. This was about half way through the test. Since then it has got through numerous 3dmark tests without a hitch, including an hour of continous 3dmark as I looped the benchmark.

2: Does this sound OK? I'm guessing it should be OK as it's been thoroughly tested with a hour of 3dmark. Surely any problems, like an incorrectly fitting heatsink) would have been highlighted by now?

Many, many thanks for your help.

Yeah - should be ok if it's made it through 3dmark! You got any pics of it fitted?

I've had a 9800 pro with the original arctic cooling fan (his excalibur version) and that tended to blow fairly warm air out the back but that doesn't say anything as i have friends who would probably say it was cool (6800 owners! :p )!

I'm fairly sure i could get a temp reading off the card using speed fan, everest or something similar but can't remember. If you can do the same that could help to put your mind at rest!

Incidentally, how much hotter does it get under load? I think mine output heat fairly constantly - far more in 2d than my GX2 does now infact!

Edit: Just thought - if it's one of the newer arctic coolers then it probably will blow cool air no matter what! They're super effective! I had an ati5 on my x850xt and could clock it from 520/540 to 621/596 - not only that but load @ stock clocks rose to 72 degrees with the original cooler and with the arctic silencer on the card would only get to 45 degrees fully overclocked! Awesome!

I've tried getting a temp reading from Speedfan and Everest but I don't think there is a temp sensor enabled for that card.

I ran another 3dmark and I could definitely feel some warm air trickling out the back of the case, but no more than a trickle. Once 3dmark had finished the air coming out of the back was cooler, so I guess it's working OK.

I suppose, if the worst comes to the worst and my card dies, I just get a new one! It won't take anything else with it will it?

Shouldn't do any real damage to anything but itself but you never know! I wouldn't worry! ;)

As i said above the arctic cooler range is very, very effective and my x850 was a very hot running card that used a lot of power - used quite a bit more than a 7800gt for instance! Yet the stream of air coming out the back (even when overclocked) was simply only ever warm! Comparing that to its original leaf blower cooler is amazing as that blew out hot air plain and simple!!!

Just enjoy your purchase - i'd think it's simply doing an excellent job!
