Needless to say its taking a bit of getting used to from XP.

How do I have shortcuts to say an excel file when I click the start menu button? (In XP i have links to 8 documents)

How do I turn off the folder groupings on the taskbar, i like to see what I have open, not have to click an icon.

How do you display the taskbar item text? e.g. I have IE open on overclockers, in XP it says overclockers, Google will be next to it and say google. Now its just an ie logo

Edit - How to I enable quicklaunch? I just have IE and Outlook in quicklaunch

If you pin excel to the Start Menu, then when you go over the small arrow all recent docs will be listed, from there you can pin docs to the list so they stay there :)

Edit: Open the program, right click & select Pin to taskbar
Also right click the task bar & select properties, on the drop down menu change it from always combine, hide labels

Just got a new laptop with win7, the missus is on it right now whilst I'm on my XP desktop,
She keeps calling 'how do I do this or that & half the time I can't replicate my usual tricks.
Trying to cut & paste with the mouse won't work properly so I had to use the Edit button. Right mouse clicking to show the cut & paste options kept highlighting the whole page

If you rest the cursor on the group button, it will preview the windows without needing to click. If it still annoying you right click the task bar and there is an option in there somewhere to ungroup everything.

Create shortcut, drag into the start menu and it should ask if you want to pin to the start menu.

Right click task bar, Properties, taskbar buttons = never combine

As above.

Right click icon on taskbar and pin to taskbar.

Nope, i get a small red circle with a cross through it. (this is with a shortcut to excel doc and notepad) This is my main place to get to docs i use all the time really, along with remote desktop

never combine. thanks done that and can now see info

pin to taskbar. got that, can you make them smaller?

Open the doc you want, then right click the taskbar icon & pin it.
All your pinned items will stay there, so all u need to do is right click & select the doc.

Thanks, but i still dont understand. I open a document 'asset register' select 'pin this program to taskbar' then close it.
Its now left floating on the taskbar.

How do i move it from here to the start menu, just above where it says 'all programs' I simply want a link that says 'asset register' and the excel icon when i press the start (logo) button

e.g.

start.jpg

when excel is open, you see it's icon on the superbar.

right-click on this, select "pin to start taskbar". you can also move it to a desired position on your bar.

the excel icon will now remain even when excel is closed. if you now right-click this icon any time, it should give you a list of most frequently opened excel files. if you've opened asset register it should be there.

if you want to do things the old way, just make a shortcut on your desktop, then drag this to the start icon (the windows logo), wait for the start menu to open, and move it where you want it on the start menu. The cursor text will change to "pin this item to the start menu".

Simples! :D

Am i just being retarded?

I open the file asset register.xls
Right click it and select 'pin this program to taskbar'
Now a small excel icon appears that loads up a blank excel workbook
If i right click it i can select 'unpin this program from the taskbar'
This can only be dragged on the taskbar.

I want it on the start menu. When I create a shortcut on the desktop and drag it onto the start button (exactly how i want) I see a small red cross and it wont let me?!

Edit - for some reason it WILL let me add a shortcut of a network file to the desktop but not to the start menu. If i copy the network file to my desktop, create a shortcut of it, then i can add it to the start menu...

But thats not what i want. I want easy shortcuts of network files on my start menu. Any idea why desktop will allow them but start menu wont?

Ok in 1 - u can see your program listed in the start menu, right click & pin to start menu (it will go to the top like it did in xp)

In 2 - u can see that all recent docs & pinned docs (ones you want to be listed all the time as a shortcut) by mouseovering on the little triangle that looks like a play button

It isnt quite the same as XP, its neater in theory as you only have the one excel icon with all ure docs shortcut'd (pinned).

Ok, so i turned back on store and display recently opened programs and items, excel went on with the document and i pinned them. Now they are one more click away than they were in XP

How do I get my citrix connection on there?

Cant believe windows 7 doesnt allow shortcuts to be dragged onto the start menu

Unfact screw it - for the time being im just keeping a folder on my desktop called 'start menu' all my old shortcuts can stay in here. Doesnt anyone have a list of shortcuts to network places like i had on XP? (see above for old pic)

That's been your problem then!

You can do exactly that

The two options under start menu > privacy are now on. I go to a place on our network, drag the item or shortcut to the item and try and drop it on the start menu. It doesnt work. I get a red circle with cross through

When i have a document on my local machine, in C:\ i can drag the item or shortcut onto the start menu and it drops and works great.

Give it a try with stuff on a network and see if you get a red cross
