Started playing with the manual settings on my A570 and came up with this little abstract that was sitting on my desk...

C&C appreciated :) Be gentle!

What manual settings helped you take that? Where you aiming for DOF?

I was trying to focus in on the stapler while the background was all blurred. I didn't use a flash and looking at the exif data the shutter speed was 1/8 and the fstop was 2.6 (the lowest fstop my camera offers)

I then played with the manual focus to try and create the look I was trying to achieve, which was somewhat difficult with that lens I guess? Or are there other settings I could have tweaked?

Many thanks for your advice :)

Been playing around a bit this morning and I still can't get the effect I am looking for (outside of photoshop)

I basicly want everything but the stapler to be blurred in this shot. The lowest fstop I can set is 2.6. Is this what is causing the problem?

Thanks for any help.

The size of your sensor and F stop limits your DoF, since its a compact you can't change much. Unless there is a macro mode ?

If I select macro mode while in manual mode it seems to auto focus on the stapler but I achieve a better image if I just use full manual mode and take the manual focus down to as low as possible.

Might have to invest in a couple of new lenses for it as it supports them.

Any recommendations as to what type of lenses I want?

Many thanks for your help

For the A570 ?? Sorry, I don't.

But for compact, i personally would use the camera to its limits rather then keep investing money into it. It's often false economy because you will never be able to sell it on (much if at all as the market for these add ons lenses are small).

There are a fair few lenses on the bay for it....for some ridiculously cheap prices.

The official canon close up lense kit (250d) comes to around £50.

But like you say, I am probably better off selling this a570 and putting the money towards a 400d or something...
