Just ordered all the bits for my first build - have I missed anything?

OCZ informed me that my 800W elitexstream would run a 4ghz quad core, 280gtx, 8800gt and 9600gso all three overclocked as far as I could get them without starting to break a sweat. 800W is ludicrous amounts of power. From a respected brand (i.e. corsair/pc power and cooling/seasonic/bequiet/couple of others) it'll run pretty close to anything you can plug into it. Four 285's might be asking a bit much, but I wouldn't want to bet either way. I'll recommend whichever modular corsair takes your fancy.
Mind you, this psu did then expire. I put this down to coincidence.

500gb OS and 1tb data makes sense actually. I'm a bit more skewed, 30gb operating system 2tb data. Samsung F1's are pretty loved, I'd probably have gone with a 320 and a 1tb from Samsung instead but there really isn't much to call between them.

There's a whole thread even now fighting over the best air cooler. I expect the TRUE to win it (and have voted for this). Out of the box with properly chosen fans it beats almost all the competition (including some efforts with water). If you lap it then it's pretty unbeatable. Lapping it will rob you of the will to live mind, it's difficult and takes ages. I used a machine to do mine and it still took ages. It does not come with fans. Sign of quality that, a discerning user chooses their own. Like decent cases generally not coming with power supplies.

p.s. We'd probably all do it slightly differently, that's the joy to computers. I almost forgot the initial question: Nope, you've forgotten nothing, it'll go together beautifully. I presume of course that you're using a beta of windows 7, a previous copy of windows, or linux.

LOL - heart stopped for just a couple of seconds there before I read down :-)

Yeah - chose the case mainly cos it was big and hopefully that will make it less fiddly. Also - it looks like it has carry handles, so if i need to move the beast in the future it should help me.

THanks for the build advice. the PCW vids are pretty cool.

Will take lots of pics. Really hoping it works when i'm done building because i'm not famous for my DIY skills :(

The best bit is the moment where your about to turn it on after finished build. I built mine and got no problems but was getting random crashes eventually was faulty ram that memtest failed to regonise until the pc wouldnt even boot with them in. But last month i would say i know that if i turn my pc on it will work 100% stable. You will enjoy it! worst bit is tidying up after :(

That's a good machine - will definitely play anything you throw at it.

Hopefully it will - i decided to go for a bit of overkill given that i probably wont upgrade for quite a while.

BTW the guys are OC are amazing - i just called them to swap power supplies on my order (going for http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-165-CM&tool=3 instead) and they split my order into two shipments in order that i can now have it tomorrow rather than waiting at home all monday! Great customer service. And it's raining all weekend, so i can justify spending the whole time building it now :) :) :)

Looks a good build mate. A couple of things I would have changed though;

1. BeQuiet PSU
2. 4870X2

Other than that it looks good. Have a read through this thread, benenhausen goes through the steps of building his pc, some good info in that thread.

And finally,

DON'T FORGET THE STAND-OFFS!

I changed to a Coolmaster 700w modular today with the flat cables - i really want to try to make it neat in there.

WRT the gfx card - i heard dual GPU boards can create 'microstutter' - no idea if this is true because there seems to be a lot of arguing about it on forums but i went for the 285 cos i think it's the fastest single gpu card available. no clue but it'll kick the granny out of my laptop anyway! :-]

So - if i heard right - i need to toss the stand-offs in the bin immediately? ;-)

Lol, sorry if we're labouring the point but quite a few first-timers have missed 'em out lately. It's an easy mistake to make but it can really cost you.

:-] I'll be on it first thing when the delivery gets here tomorrow. Hope it's 9am but i seriously doubt it given that i'm down in hampshire
