Yay! :) Now hopefully my 360 will work (sound wise) through the pc and i'll get slightly clearer music compared to my onboard :)

Running through the slightly date but still damn nice Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 surround set, seems the speakers have outlasted 5 pc builds :D

What would you recommend as the best test from onboard to these babies to get a good feel for it?

Thanks!

You will get a lot clearer music using the X-fi, my X-fi broke, so i had to go back to Realtek AC97 intergrated, and when i frist moved from itnergrated to the X-fi, i never noticed much of a difference, but now going back to intergrated audio, it sounds awfull :(

omigod! :D

Just got the x-fi, drivers in, threw on a couple of mp3's, wow!! :D

Sounds like i have just pulled the cotton wool out of my ears!! Its so...CLEAR!

And the 360 is working through Line in, Surround sound PGR3 at last instead of stero from the 1 speaker of the 14" tv :D

did you get the latest drivers off the website or from the disk? Im using the ones off the disk because when i got ones off website i couldnt play sound in surround mode. If that problems been fixed ill get them though :)

Just using the disk version right now, seems to do everything i want and sounds damn good doing it :)

i get that same problem, with web update 4.
it forces all rear and centre sound through the sub woofer

Just took the time to go through all the settings using the creative knowledge base to guide me, turned off the EAX effects (irritating reverb anyone?) and set the CMSS to be centre, not forward (I'd previously had to set the balance all the way back on my speakers to hear the surround...).
So far its pretty decent :)

So what does this X-Fi lark do for games?

Supports the latest types of EAX, some games have patches for it which are meant to be pretty decent, CMSS also helps to introduce a surround sound effect in games if set up right, with headphones, but I wouldnt recommend using it with music. Not to mention you've got the increased sound clarity which is great for hearing people coming in games like CSS. Its also a fairly decent all round sound card, as long as yours works :)

One thing i've always wondered about the X-Fi... does it make a difference even if you only have a pair of cheap 2.1 speakers?

hmmmmm....

is this xmod any good...will it be any good for laptop audio.

at my flat i just have my laptop going through some 2.1 speakers...it sounds wet compared to my desktop at home with the real xfi in it....

will it at least give better quality from the laptop to the 2.1speakers?

Yes all Ive got is some cheap altec that shove out way too much bass and its noticable. On headphones you might notice it more.

I did notice some clicking in a 128kbs song playing on winamp. Not sure if thats something I will have to alter, the following song was 192kbs and you could hear the clarity. Now a 224kbs is playing and it definetly sounds quality :) even better!

In games, yes its noticable. The sound of the (bf2) chopper moving around me and in the distance, pretty impressive though subtle

Previous card was a sb live 5.1

I dont pride myself on having a good ear (though uneven stereo bugs me when others dont notice/care) but its noticable even on cheap speakers :)
Overall its a luxury of course, onboard is fine for general stuff.

I saw that xmod and figured it couldnt be equalivant to the pci card. Doesnt external usually cost more not less?
