In a world of my own
I got my annual bonus this week and after paying off the credit cards and a few items I'd promised the wife I've gone ahead and order the new PC I've been promising myself. I'm very happy. :D
Finally decided that I can't justify £2500 on a 5090 and with the rumour of a 5080ti in the summer I've decided to get a 5080 based system today and potentially upgrade later in the year if that card appears.

I've gone with the "OcUK Gaming Claymore - Intel Core i9 14900KF, Geforce RTX 5080 Gaming PC" as the base system, upgrading the RAM to 64GB, the storage to 5TB (1+4) and swapping the case for the Hyte Y70 Touch infinite black, which I've always had a thing for.
Also there is a 6% discount on the system which is really timely for me, last week when I was speccing it there was no discount. :)

Hyte Y70 Touch Infinite Black
Intel Core i9-14900KF (Raptor Lake-S) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail
Kingston FURY Beast 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C40 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KF556C40BBK2-64)
Asus Prime LC 360 ARGB AIO CPU Liquid Cooler - 360mm
*Build* Asus GeForce RTX 5080 Prime OC 16GB GDDR PCI-Express Graphics Card
WD Black SN850X 1TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS100T2X0E)
WD Black SN850X 4TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS400T2X0E)

All for £3,299.99 which while significantly more than I spent on my old system, I still see as pretty reasonable for a machine I expect to last me the next five years.

I'll be able to pass my current 3080ti based system down to my son and sell off his old 1080ti based system on Facebook to recover a few pennies.

Now it's just the tense wait for build and delivery!

Nice System! Giving my honest opinion I would probably say an AMD based system would be a better choice. I say this because those Intel 14th Gen CPU's can be problematic (some known issues that have been discussed here) and the AMD CPU's will perform better (gaming) and chuck out a lot less heat. I had to RMA my 14900K and the replacement I got was starting to show issues after a few months (stock settings on latest BIOS).

That being said, its still a great PC and definitely not trying to rain on your parade. The 5080 should be a real nice card!

Is the Z790 chipset with the LGA1700 socket is EOL? AM5 would have been a safer choice for future upgradeability.

Yep, LGA1700 is the previous generation socket. I was exactly the same as the OP for a long time. Intel have burned their bridges with many previously dedicated customers inc me.

Everyone can choose their own poison though and I'm sure the PC will be great - factoring in the warranty via OCUK and also intel the OP should be good!

Yeah, I wouldn't feel comfortable given the potential degradation issues with the 14900K, although for mixed use/productivity it's a beast of a CPU.

For purely gaming I'd have went for a 9800X3D, although the i9 will still give stellar performance.

thats really slow ram in there for a higher spec system...did they specify which 1000w psu they're putting in there...hopefully not a bog standard aerocool seeingas you're using a 14900kf

It uses a AIO water cooler.

not worries about the heat the 14900kf generates..it's just a bit of a power hog si needs an aio...I'm more concerned that for £3k prebuilt they're going to put a cheap psu in there with a ***p warranty..and being an expensive system, I'd want at least a quality psu with at least a 10yrs warranty on it. did they say what psu they're putting in it..and what motherboard? Neither are listed in specs.
It'll be an excellent all round pc, but as others have said, if out an out gaming, I'd go 9800x3d build..if you're going to play at 4k and use dlss upscale to max fps, the x3d chips will wipe the floor with the intel, while using far less power to do so..that cpu did launch in 2023 after all
got the sn850x in my own system, but cheaper alternatives now equally as good I think (though saving small potatoes to overall cost)...but they are excellent drives..nice having 2 m.2's though...and 4gb...going to have a nice games library there, and seperate from windows..wish I'd done that from the outset myself
Be interesting to hear your thoughts on the case when you get it. Got an 011d evo myself..1st gen, and being a fishbowl style, I have the black bar that goes down the front left edge where the 2 glass panels meet (wasn't until gen 2 that they just did glass to glass)..sort of spoils the look and iritates me...having the touch screen looks cool, but you do loose the 'can see everything inside' look of the fishbowl design a little ( but that's personal preference thing)
Enjoy system when it arrives

The spec says "1000W 80+ Gold Rated PSU"

you might want to ask seeing as you spending over £3k. and ask what motherboard they're using... OCuk have a tendency to put lesser psu's in the prebuilds to save a bit of cost..I'd rather pay the extra and get a better 1000w psu in there..the aerocool 1000W Gold is £124.99 on ocuk put doesn't state warranty length..but another vendor state a 2 yrs warranty on the psu....at very least the phanteks amp gh 1000W 80plus platinum is £128.99, so only £4 more and has an 8 yrs warranty, or better get the Superflower Leadex III Gold 1000W 80 plus gold at £149.99 with 10yrs warranty...so not much difference in price(esp overall) but big if the peace of mind...if aib is only willing to give a 2 yrs warranty on their psu, that would be a hard 'pass' from me.

It will be the kolink regulator model. My ocuk customisable build had the same psu listing

Yup.

OCUK use Kolink PSU's as standard in their prebuilds unless you specifically request a different brand/model.

Their parent company is Caseking, they have some sort of partnership or deal with Kolink afaik which is partly why they push their power supplies and one or two other items.

If you are still waiting for it to be built, contact them and see what PSU is in it and swap it out if necessary.
too late for me, got mine in January. I had no idea what psu it had and was curious so opened up the case and had a look. Wish i didn’t as after i found kolink on threads it was mostly negative stuff. PC has been great so far though, can’t complain and the 3 year warranty is reassuring.

Kolink's bronze units are pretty dire, not the worst but not what I'd expect to be promoted by a prominent computer outlet like OCUK.

Their gold and platinum aren't terrible, some review well, but they're middling at best and lack the warranty compared to similarly priced and higher quality competitor platforms. I'd not be too concerned as if the PSU has worked well for you this long it probably will for some time to come.

"Gold rated" doesn't mean as much as people tend to think either, it's simply an efficiency rating. You could have PSU that's technically highly efficient but a fire hazard that could blow your entire rig out if it died, there's higher quality bronze units (aka less efficient) on the market than some gold rated. Honestly the whole efficiency standard thing borders on a marketing scam, you see massive premiums for platinum units but the amount of energy saved over a gold would never save you enough in electricity bills to be worth it for the extra cost.
