Hi guys,

Just ordered Sky Fibre Unlimited tonight as my Sky Unlimited (standard BB) ends in 6 days, and have a few questions if anyone can help please? :)

1) Will I just use my Standard Sky Router that they sent with my normal ADSL or will they send me a new/different one?

2) Is there a decent alternative router that is better than the supplied one, and is it possible, as I seem to recall problems with using a different router with Sky some years back? Basically I want better wireless and more stable/reliable connection?

3) Any idea how long it takes to switch over? Does it need an engineers visit or the like?

Think that's it for now, though I'm sure I've missed something  :p

You will get a visit from an Openreach engineer to install a wall socket that contains a filter.
Sky will send you a new router modem.
If you don't want to use it long term (you should probably use it initially) then you can get an alternative router and just use the sky box as a modem, alternatively you can get another VDSL modem.
I use the BT Openreach modem and an Asus router - note you will need alternative firmware for the router as Sky uses MER authentication - I use Merlin which is a modified Asus firmware that accommodates MER authentication.
You will also need to extract the username/password from the Sky router/modem - there are plenty of guides on the Web as to how to do this.

There probably won't be a visit from Openreach as (AFAIK) Sky have gone for the cheaper self install option. Unless there's a serious issue the engineer will just visit the FTTC cabinet.

Not a major issue, but:

  • It's less likely that any local wiring issues will be identified and fixed.
  • You won't get a shiny new master socket.
  • You won't have the opportunity to grab the standalone Openreach modem (which you won't actually need but is nice to have when you're choosing third-party routers).

It would be great if an engineer did visit and installed a nice new plate/filter (and to check the wiring?)

Also, just trying to look into the BT Openreach modem thing, would be great to get one free as it seems one of the Asus routers works a lot better than the Sky Router?

If I do use the BT OR router, do i need to enter my details into that instead of the Asus or....?

you should get the black SR102 which does both ADSL and fibre (probably a few days before activation)

If you've pulled your username and password, you can use them on a different router (sky don't give these out though, also the SR102 has pretty poor wireless)

took us around three weeks from ordering to be upgraded from our existing Sky BB iirc, didnt need an engineers visit as its a self install, the engineer just switches you on at the exchange.

No engineer will attend. It's now a self install and the engineer only goes to the cabinet to set your fibre up.

If you don't have a Sky Hub 2 (the black one that has Sky on both sides) then one should have been ordered for you. No Openreach Modem required.

Sky won't give you the username and password unless you're on their Pro service and even then that's all they will give you. I should point out that's it's strictly against the Sky Fibre T's & C's to use non Sky supplied equipment on normal Sky Fibre.

Thanks for the info chaps :)

If I do get the BT OR Modem and the Asus Wireless Router, do I need to enter my details into both or just the Asus, does the OR modem auto connect or is setup needed?

All VDSL modems perform similarly to be honest.

The HG612 is good in the respect that it's fairly easy to get the stats from and performs well with DSLStats and other such programs. It's got good community support too with the newest hacked firmware fully supporting G.INP.

Just had fibre installed, next a new router :D

Just bought a TP-LINK Archer C9 router for a cracking price so hopefully it'll be all OK?

It also has a regularly updated DD-WRT beta as well should I need it? :)
