Well im looking to gain some weight a bulk up so under the advice of a friend i brought some Whey Isolate 80 and 1kg of Maltodextrin.
Could someone tell me what maltodextrin does all i can find is that its a carb!

Maltodextrin, also known as multidextrose or glucose polymer powder, is a synthetic polysaccharide, i.e. a complex carbohydrate. It is used by a range of sports people to help meet the high-energy demands of intense exercise, especially by tri-athletes. Although structurally it is a complex carbohydrate the chemical structure is such that it is open to rapid enzymatic degradation, i.e. it is digested and absorbed very rapidly, infact faster than sugar, so it scores high on the glyceamic index. For this reason many people are worries it will put on fat so in bodybuilding it is invaluable for the lean hard gainer who struggles to eat enough carbohydrate each day. By adding the powder to drinks can increase intake by 6-800kcals a day. It is also useful for post workout replenishment of carbohydrate stores. Maltodextrin powders are cheap, and useful for bulking up on.

btw, I'm still shaking my fist at you. ;)

How much you need will depend on just what your doing.

Best to just mix it with water or juice.

Mixing it with the whey would be fine, you would effectivley be adding some carbs to the protein shake and turning it in to a weight gainer, which could be quite useful if you are not getting the calories/protein intake that you need from your diet.

Im assuming you will be taking they whey after your training session and at regular intervals throughout the next day in order to see the best results.

Personally I dont rate maltodextrin, but if your going to be taking it, you need to decide when your body needs it most, IE when your highest energy requirement is going to be, work out what time you are going to be training and get it in to your blood stream as needed.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with it so I can't help you there.

But I'll take you up on the offer. ;)

All the information we have at our fingertips yet we still listen to our mate down the gym..!

What you've bought there is expensive and it's a perfect recipe for getting fat. Why buy Whey Isolate?? that stuff is usefull straight after a workout and maybe even during, that's it. It's absorbed SOO quickly. It will just fly through your body in about an hour and then that's it, all gone and your body is left with no protein source but your muscles until your next meal. This stuff is for advanced body builders ONLY, anyone else using it is wasting their time and money. It also causes an insulin spike (so does whey concentrate but not as bad and it's ten times cheaper)

Maltodextrin? Fine for sipping on while you train and in a post workout drink, fine for taking with Creatine aswell. Sports nutrition companies use this as a cheap filler in their weight gainer formula's... it's not really beneficial to you. Oats are a thousand times better and at around £1 for 2kg they're dirt cheap ;) This will cause an insulin spike also. So these two mixed together ( 40g whey - 50g maltodextrin ) will make a very good post workout drink. Even better if you mix 5g Creatine monohydrate with it.

I'm not going into too much detail about insulin etc, you can read up about that yourself if you wish. Just know that the only time you really want an insulin spike is straight after training.

You could also mix half that drink and sip on it while you train, this will minimize muscle being broken down for fuel.

If you want to put some bulk on then drink this formula, there's no need for expensive supplements. This is the best!!!

(kcal - protein/carb/fat)
100g Oats ( 390 - 8/70/8 )
40g Whey Concentrate ( 160 - 32/3/3 )
15ml Extra Virgin Olive oil (or some Omega 3-6-9 oil even better) ( 135 - 0/0/15 )

Total = 685kcal - 40g Protein - 75g Carbohydrates - 26g Fat

That's 40g of super high quality protein, 75g of low G.I. high quality, high fibre carbs and 26g of healthy fats. No sugars, sweeteners, additives, fillers, nothing but good stuff and super cheap too :)

EDIT - For an even bigger boost you can also add milk to this. Aswell as slowing down the digestion, it will also add some essential vitamins and minerals. It will also make it taste better. If you're the kind of person that struggles drinking things like this then you can also add something like Nesquik to flavour it but don't go too mad as it's full of... maltodextrin!!:D

Oats are your friend, get used to them and eat lots of them, they're food of the gods :D they also contain a very powerfull anti-oxidant that's found only in oats.

Do you just put the oats in a shaker with the protein or use an electric blender?
Putting oats straight into a shaker and necking them can be a bit rough, I do it but I've been doing things like this for years! :D

One option is to grind them up yourself. I have a big plastic container that I pour the oats into, then if I can be bothered I'll stick the hand held blender in and mulch them up a bit.

Another option is to put the oats into the shaker, add milk/water and leave them for a couple of minutes so they soften up a bit.

You can actually buy oats in ultra fine powder form from here but they're a lot more expensive @ £2.75 per kilo. They're very good as I used to buy them but now I'd rather pay £0.50 from Tesco and rough it :)

£2.75 a kilo :| buy a blender and grind them up.

That mix of whey/oats and creatine looks like a good combination!
