hey, I just passed my driving test today :) (2nd attempt) and im 17. Can anyone recomend the cheapest insurance company for young drivers??, ive been ringing around for a quote on a BMW 318i to be a named driver on my dads policy but it seems that the insurance companies are not allowing for young drivers to be put on this anymore: is this the case for all insurance companies ?????? Thanks a lot for the help :)

and if your a named driver you can earn your own no claims.

That are only valid with direct line, who ultimately will be more expensive in future than pretty much anyone else ;)

False economy, insurance under your own name will ALWAYS be more beneficial.

and more legal - if your claiming to be a secondary driver when in reality your the main one you'll be commiting fraud....

just ring around, insurance companys are pretty thick in my experiance. The policy at work says i can't drive high value or high performance vehicles, such as a directors 318i.

But its and S-reg so its the lowest value and slowest vehicle still on the fleet. (company wouldent give him another BMW, so he stuck with it. Caved in now and he's getting a 320d)

If it's against the Ts and Cs of your insurance. Not always the case, but mostly is I'll grant you.

99% of the time they cover themselves with the T&C's (that's why you are a secondary driver and not a primary) I only know of one Irish one who don't. Admiral (aka Bell, Sheila's Wheels and whatever other dodgy brands they've come up with this week) always seemed to come out cheeaper for me but check confused.com then call up the best five quotes and see what you can screw out of them! Remember adding a older female driver can bring the quote down in some cases so always try that and see if it will help!

Well elephant/admiral etc all wanted silly money for my focus, Directline wanted £1600 (although that is with a fair bit of discount ;) )

Can't really argue with that.

Have to put another vote in for direct line here. While still not "cheap" @ £1700 to insure a basic 1.4 Escort at 17, they were the cheapest, and I did a lot of ringing around that day lol.

Lots of people (including me) are named drivers for the first few years (until you are 19-20) and then take out your own insurance.
Trying to insure any car at 17-18 is a joke. Im 20, and ive only recently got my own insurance. If I tried to get my current car insured at 17, it would have cost me over £2000, now it costs £700, which is just about bareable. Im with Elephant, and I find them the cheapest after some time spent tweaking the online quote.

Im not going to bore you with the legality lecture, because there are a lot of other much worse things you could be doing than trying to save money from a system that is screwing you over.

directline don't tend to care if you're main or named driver, i'm main driver on my dad's policy on my car, using his NCB. I've done a few "future" checks and they still come out cheapest, and tbh i couldnt afford any car on my own policy now, so the "it'll be cheaper in the future" thing becomes redundant :) At 17, i was looking at the wrong side of £2.5k for my 2L mondeo, with dad as policy holder but me as main driver it was £1050.

Tom.

If you go named on the insurance, as I and many others do to save money, the Insurance company would have a hard time proving you drive the car more often than the policy holder. So with that im mind I don't see the problem. Being a named driver on my own car (registered owner is the missus and ther policy holder) costs me less than half of what it should to insure if I was the policy holder.

Another vote for Norwich Union, they have always been far cheaper for me than anyone else.

Even after 2 years of driving they still come up £300 cheaper than the nearest quote.

(btw doing pass plus knocked off about £700 from my first insurance quote, it was originally £2000 for a 1.1 metro  )

I found barclays great for me. Go on confused.com
Likewise except I used moneysupermarket.com to find my quote.

Last year I paid £2200 with Asda on my Mondeo Ghia X.

Depends how much it was costing them. If it was huge numbers of money then they could simply check with work/colleges etc.

If you're on your first policy then do PP. It'll save you a fortune.

Norwich Union were cheapest for me in the first year, and Admiral are now. Do Pass Plus it makes a massive difference. I would recommend doing it anyway, motorway experience is worth it alone.

Call the company in my post, I used to be with Admiral, who quoted me £800 for renewal and everyone else came up with that price except GSI who quoted me £550, that's with alloy wheels decleared too.
