With xmas getting near ive been looking at a new prezzie for myself, i was going to get a wii but i know that after a week or so i will be board with it, (my father has all my old consoles all 8 of them) so i wanted somthing for my pc. Didnt really want a conroe setup thats for next year sometime, my monitors big enough so a graphics card it is then, after looking at the reviews i have gone for a bfg 8800gts so i can max out my graphics on my 1680x1050 widescreen monitor the gtx would have been overkill+too expensive+wouldnt have fitted into
my lian li case. Giving my 1800xt to my father (as usual) so he will be happy. Is there any point overclocking the card my cpu is a a64 2.5ghz single core cheers :D

Is there any point not overclocking ? :D
C'mon , you know your gonna do it anyway even if you don't need to , its the hardware enthusiast in you. :)

was reading on Firing squad that your not going to see much gain using a AMD chip with a 8800

here you go

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_8800_gtx_gts_amd_cpu_scaling/

Those of you with AMD CPUs who were planning on upgrading to GeForce 8800 will want to look over our performance results on the preceding pages carefully, especially if you planned on upgrading to the GeForce 8800 GTX. In many cases you’ll find that the GeForce 8800 GTX is so powerful that it is CPU-bound with AMD’s flagship FX-62 in games like Quake 4, and Source engine games like Dark Messiah and Half-Life 2 Lost Coast.

The GeForce 8800 GTS is a cut-down derivative of the GeForce 8800 GTX with fewer stream processors, slower clocks, and a 320-bit memory interface with less onboard memory, therefore it doesn’t have quite the graphics horsepower as the GeForce 8800 GTX and as a result, it isn’t CPU-limited nearly as often as the GeForce 8800 GTX is, although those of you with X2 3800+ and X2 4200+ chips in particular will want to look closely over our results as there are definitely cases where the GTS is CPU-bound with your CPU.

I will be doing a little experiment today and tomorrow i will be running various apps + games at 1680x1050 @ 4aa 8af on my 1800xt then on my 8800gts and i will write up the results for u guys to see. Ill be running 3dmark 05/06, fear, half life 2 lost coast, cs source stress test, doom3, halo, company of heros, battefield 2, battlefield 2142, obivion, prey and lomac. I will run them at the same settings to get a direct comparison, then ill go mad and max everything out aa+af and see what that does.

If any one has anything they want me to try then let me know. Iam gonna be busy for a while :D

I will add some overclocked results as well just to see of course :p

Will take some piccys as well.

Roughneck i can understand what your saying but there are a few holes in your argument first off in the article there was a 20odd fps increase over the 1950xtx
in most games I dont have a 1950xtx i have a 1800xt which is somewhat slower so i should see a bigger increase in my games. Second its not just max frame rates were talking I think mimimum fps are more important, in a game you dont notice 100fps you do notice 10fps the gts should improve minimum fps as well. As for the gtx being faster than the gts no **** there over 100 quid more expensive they should be faster, the gts clocks really easily ive read so ill just clock it to gtx speeds and smile :D

mm interesting i stayed away from gtx because of size i have same case as you > so what size is the gts ? could you please tell me Danoliver1 in mm cos if it's smaller then yum yum.

I dont have it yet coming thursday but i have read its the same length as the atx motherboard. The gtx would fit if u lose the hard drive cage.

lol not my argument bro , I just wouldnt think the cost would justify the increase in frame rate. But hey its your money just offering some friendly advice.

I posted that article a few days ago, with the intention of making it clear that those with an AMD cpu SHOULD upgrade?

The benchmarks show that there's a massive boost with a GTX over a GTS even on a crappy sub 2.5ghz AMD CPU, there are a couple where it doesn't help that much, but they were already CPU limited, it wouldn't make any difference if you had a 7800GTX in there instead...

Their article summary is just a load of fluff because they had no interesting conclusions to draw from their results, they thought they'd just make some up.... :p

Its almost as if they are referring to different benchmakrs...!!!
