Just purchased my first DSLR

Thank you very much! Im going to save that link to my favorites and go out and try a shoot now, thanks again!

Is this any good?

Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens

No, you need the Nikon 50mm f1.8G AF-S. Or the Nikon 35mm f1.8G AF-S DX is often better on crop frame cameras like the D40x.

Whats the difference between DX and FX lenes?

With your camera it doesn't make any difference.

FX lenses can also be used with higher end full frame cameras (like the D600, D800, D4 etc.) DX lenses can't.

Would these kind of lenses be used for portraits? If so then i may not have use for it, unless you can use them for taking shots of inside derelict buildings?

50mm and 35mm with a crop sensor will be too long for inside buildings.

50/85 are used for portraits generally.

One crucial thing to remember is that your camera has a crop factor of 1.5x, so bear this in mind.

35mm becomes 52.5mm
50mm becomes 75mm
85mm becomes 127.5mm

In your position I would do the following:

Upgrade 18-55 to Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 - this is the sharper non stabilised lens. As I am a Canon user you might want to check if this lens will work with your body.
55-200mm VR for long stuff
A 35mm/50mm of your chosing for a fast prime

This will give you a good combination of lenses to cover pretty much everything.

Just got the understanding exposure book. Very good. Got the ipad/kindle edition. Just went to see the actual book in the shop and what a shame, the pictures in the kindle edition are terrible quality. I'm buying the book too! :)

I also recommend the Lonely Planet's Guide To Travel Photography. Very good book and don't let the travel bit put you off since it's about taking good pictures and composition (as well as the basics around flash and exposure) regardless of the travel bit.

Whatever lens you want, it must be for FX fit as any DX lenses will not fit..You be Restricted with that camera.
I thought that camera was Discontinued ages ago...

Good Luck.

This is wrong, the d40x supports almost all Nikon f-mount lens, full frame of DX crop. The only thing to note is of the lens is not equipped with a focus motor (non AF-S) then you won't get autofocus, and older lenses without a CPU chip won't meter

I just got the Bryan Paterson book too, going to give it a read later.

The paper version arrived today. Shame about the digital version, the pictures in the book are superb and could have been reproduced much better on the kindle app for the iPad
