Hi I am a bit lost here, the instructions that came with my CPU doesnt really make it quite clear reagards to thermal paste.

Any way I was phoning around my local PC shops in my town to see if they had and thermal paste as I want to get it all setup today.

A guy i spoke to said you dont need to buy thermal paste these days as Its all ready on the parts.

Looking at my 4400+ chip its dry and doesnt have anything on it.. on the fan there is a sticker is this were the paste will be ? and I am ment to peel it off ??

Little bit lost here.

Assuming you have a retail boxed processor, the heatsink/fan that comes with it will have paste already on the heatsink itself. If it's OEM or you are using a custom heatsink/fan, you'll need to check if it comes with it or not.

There should be a square grey patch on the bottom of the heatsink.

This is the thermal pad, dont touch it as finger prints/marks will prevent the best contact

Just stick it on mate

EDIT - Damn that was quick, no replies when i clicked New Post

never seen that grey patch for some reason I thought I would be attaching the fan, with the fan at the bottom.

O my god how thick am I !!

Yer so that grey box all ready has it on so just attach and bobs ya uncle !

Does the grey patch normally have a sticker over it to keep the Gel fresh ?? I have had a look and I cant really tell, but if the all come with a a plastic cover seal I will start touching it to try and peel somethen off

any one no of a easy to follow giude to help me install it, I no its not rocket science but would just like something to work with incase I do somethen wrong

thanks for all your help every one !

so what are you saying that grey stuff on my HSF is not thermal paste ?? and I Would need to buy soem thermal paste and apply it on the chip first then attach the HSF ?

confused now

Thermal grease is an alternative to thermal pads. You need one or the other not both. If it is a retail box (heatsink came in the box with the 4400) then you don't need to add anything else it will come ready to fit with thermal agent already applied to the heatsink. It looks like a dull grey square on the underside (the side in contact with the processor) make sure you avoid touching it if possible and that there is no protective plastic or film. Place the heatsink on the processor and clip it on.

There should be fitting instructions in the box, otherwise check AMDs website. It's a simple operation though.

I had a thermal pad

The same as my Opty146, Newcastle 3200+

People have been getting different HSF's too though. I got the heatpipe cooler

You only need to apply thermal grease if the heatsink is missing a thermal pad or no grease already. As Elvis has said. If it's a retail bundle it'll come with thermal pad or grease applied.

4400x2 stock was a heatpipe.
