I tried kickboxing last night for the first time. I have been meaning to try it for a few years now and finally went along for a free trial.

The warmup was pretty intense and ongoing, but much to my own surprise I lasted until the end of the session. Very tired afterwards, but I want to keep going back. I'll have to pay £40 a month, but that gives me full access to the centre's evening classes, which are on every night (except perhaps Tuesdays which are for the Pros). If you go twice a week then I feel it pays for itself.

I know how important it is to keep my guard up etc. and I know about the concussive risks if you aren't careful. I do not intend to compete, just to use it to keep fit. I also swim once a week (most weekends) so that should also help.

So, any advice? :)

Which type of kickboxing?

Try to get input from as many different people/instructors as possible. Some will teach you in a way/style which clicks with you easier.

I developed my side kick in so many different ways, largely to do with inputs from many different teachers. I can deliver a pretty nasty one if I don't say so myself!

Concussive risk? I'd assume that if training you're not trying to ko your partner and focusing more on technique and fitness. If someone is trying to hurt you find a different partner.

Get hit! :)

I did Muay Thai for years and the sparring is the best part. It allows you to put your new skills into practice and if you're at a good gym with well structured and well supervised training the risks are fairly minimal. Sure you'll pick up a few minor bumps and bruises here and there but it's all part of the fun.

The main thing is to enjoy it and you'll soon realise it's not that sore getting hit anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys, only just remembered about this thread.

Don't worry, I have no intention of hurting or being hurt by any sparring partners. I'm not even sparring yet.
