I've just installed an additional 4GB RAM into my late 2009 21.5" iMac, bringing it up to 8GB. Am I right in thinking I should see a performance boost during normal operation, e.g. opening applications etc? It may just be the placebo affect, but it does seem faster launching safari, iTunes etc.. not done anything else yet.

The reason I upgraded was it was dirt cheap, and during certain resource heavy tasks I noticed the machine was swapping quite a bit so thought i'd treat it to an upgrade.

Funnily enough Ive just shoved another 8gb in my mid 2010 27" and it does seem quite a bit snappier.

Like you said the prices of ram at the moment is so silly, you'd be daft not to treat yourself and your mac. £30 for 8gb is a no brainer.

Enjoy :>

I very recently upgraded my 2011 27" iMac from 4Gb to 12Gb and it has given it a dramatic boost. Very pleased.

Apple wanted an extra £200 to install 12Gb as default but I paid just over £30.

Bingo!

Just done the same on my MBP and it has definitely made a difference for Aperture/Lightroom and other RAM intensive apps. Can't say safari and the like are any quicker as such, but the system seems 'smoother' in general with loads of apps open and 3 or 4 spaces on the go.

£40 for 8Gb of RAM was, and is, without doubt a no brainer.

Didn't realise having 12gb would be that cheap.

Without naming competitors, what would i need to be buying ?

Depending on year of manufacture, either 1066 or 1333 DDR3 SODIMM. Depending on year also dictates how much RAM the machines can take. Early aluminium ones could only take a max of 4GB, later 8GB, unibody models a max of 16GB and 32GB for 27" models. Mid 2010 seems to be when 1333 DDR3 was introduced. You can put 1333 in earlier models, but it will run at 1066.

I presume it already has 2 x 2gb sticks out of a maximum of 4 ?

So what config do i need to order ? Can i mix 2 x 4gb with 2 x 2gb ?

I wouldn't mind putting another 4gb in mine bringing it to 8. Will OcUK ever sell the memory I need for my Macbook Pro 15" Feb 2011 model?

Personally I don't mix RAM on any of my machines. The RAM I remove I usually just "pay it forward" to friends or family that could use it for an upgrade. I don't see why you couldn't mix it though.

I've just checked the crucial site myself for my own iMac. 8GB kit (4GBx2) for £40. Ordered two kits. Can't argue with those prices.

Pretty impressed with the delivery speed. Order 6pm on the 21st, arrived this morning. Just upgraded both the iMac and MBP to 8GB.

The MBP could definitely do with an SSD upgrade next.
