Just... Why...

Depends on the road.

Single carriage way with NSL or 50 limit - overtake as quickly as possible and slow down to whatever speed is appropriate.

Dual carriage way/motorway - cruise at 70-75 unless not appropriate, overtaking at the same speed and returning to middle/left hand lane unless I can see someone going faster coming up behind me as I need to overtake and then I’ll do it as quickly as possible or just wait until they pass.

Anything else just indicates to me that you either aren’t driving properly or have some kind of complex about owning the road and should be given a wide berth.

i've only ever had it once, merge after a roundabout, me in the right hand lane with a lorry, a volvo and a blue mondeo in the left lane.

i judged that trying to push forward to get in front of the volvo would be cutting it too close and was unsafe, so i indicated and moved to pull in behind him only to find the mondeo had moved right up the volvo's backside and the driver staring at me with an expression of "**** you you aint getting my space", so i had to put my foot down to get in front of the volvo (which a few seconds before i'd considered dodgy) which thankfully my car was fast enough to do before ending up in the oncoming queue of traffic.

one of those "wish i was a peeler" moments.

my situation in the op though wasn't in any way dangerous, just pointless attempt at annoying me by the audi.

i will admit i agree, i have no sympathy at all for anyone who tries to speed up when being overtaken on a single lane road, should be legal to ram people off the road then claim on their insurance if they do this.

Agree, .. and when someone does speed up when I'm overtaking them on a single lane road .. I do tend to cut back in in front of them closer than I normally would on purpose.

I've had that problem too in the past on a merge where the car to the left speeds up as your going past to try and prevent you merging in the gap. If I'm slightly in front of them I cut them up!

This sounds perfectly acceptable to me. If hes going at 70 and is approaching another car then that obviously means the other car is going slower than 70. It should be habit to get the overtake done quickly as to not hold up any other traffic travelling faster than you also. Doesnt matter if there is nobody else on the road, it is a good habit to have. I bet it infuriates you when you are travelling faster than other traffic trying to do an overtake then there is somebody pootling along in the outside lane carrying out the slowest overtake ever recorded and you're stuck behind them for miles when if they just sped up that extra 10mph it would have been over in seconds.
Just.. No.. Why would you do that with no traffic behind? I'm out.

pretty sure it is an ego thing. tend to see it on the bigger powered cars. only last night I moved over from an on slip to let a guy in a mustang join the duel carriage way, I move back in and the guy bombs it past me only to pull back in front as the road goes to single lane followed by a 30 limit with speed camera then traffic lights. I thought well done mate you look like a prat in a fancy car and just burned a fiver of petrol for the privilege. well done

Indeed, fortunately that behaviour is pretty rare here, with the exception of one road in particular that has known overtaking spots. Quite often you'll get stuck behind someone who doesnt understand corners and pootles along at 40 only to speed up to 60 the moment they hit a straight.

Fortunately it's not a problem a healthy dose of displacement cant fix. (Unless its a range rover sport, in which case he takes off like a bat out of hell and you catch up to him at the next corner when he's dropped back down to 30)

Funny was driving back that same road today and got audi'd again, a q7 who felt 60mph on an nsl road was hindering his progress and cutting some pretty close overtakes to move along the convoy of cars.

I dunno, in my experience it tends to be the mundane ~2l diesels that are the worst offenders. There's a few proper fast motors around here as well as the biker crowd, none of whom have i ever clocked doing anything real stupid.

I had a not too dissimilar incident to your RR Sport today. Single carriageway road with a 60 limit. I slowed down to around 40 to pass a car and a couple of cyclists on the hard shoulder and sped up again. The car behind obviously decided I was going too slow and decided to try an overtake as I was accelerating away, except he didn't seem to be able to accelerate past so I ended up having to brake again to let the guy in front of me before the cars coming the other way took him out...

Needless to say I then spent the next 10 miles sat behind him.
