Justifying buying A 1100T CPU ...

At the moment I have a AMD 955 X4 3.2GHZ CPU (6MB L3 CACHE) and its overclocked to 4.0ghz,

But i've been interested in upgrading to an 1100T X6 3.3GHZ CPU (6MB L3 CACHE) and attempting the same overclock.

Whats putting me off is the cache size per core goes from 1.5MB down to 1MB per core and i remember when i upgraded my old rig from the cpu having a 512KB cache to a 1MB cache the performance upgrade was quite big.

Would it have that much effect on me and is it that big of a deal? I will be using the system for gaming 99% of the time.

Also i know this is hardly a valid point but my friend has the 1055T and my 4 core beats his on the windows experience score ... i'm guessing that wouldn't be the case with the 1100T though?

The X4 actually performs better in about 90% of the games than the X6. There's absolutely no point in upgrading, if you're itching to upgrade then wait for Bulldozer.

I'd wait and get one when BD comes out ... you might get one at a discounted price....or just buy BD.

It would seem silly not to buy the newest tech on offer... if its in your price point

I answered based on your 99% gaming use. Yes the multitasking is good but I do not see the value (£150+ less the resale of the 955) over an upgrade to BD in the near future. Your x4 is a good cpu and is probably as fast as an 1100T for nearly everything.

My 1055T at 3.5GHz 24/7 OC is a very good cpu and there is nothing it will not run well, it is 1100T equivalent although the 1100T may well overclock better.

The main advantage for me from a hex core is the ability to run windows 7 plus two VM's each having two dedicated cores and 2-3Gb ram.
 
I just wanted to check if your mobo could take AM3+ CPUs. As far as I see it can't.

Have a read of the FAQ regarding the Members Market. I think there's someone advertising an AMD 1100T in there at the moment, second hand. You can save yourself quite a bit buying second hand, and it'll be exactly the same.

I have one rig with a 965BE and one with an 1100T and there isn't a lot of difference for gaming, but I can clock the 965BE to 3.8GHz, though the 1100T can reach 4.3GHz with about the same amount of effort. You also have Turbo mode if you're not overclocking (or even if you fancy trying to use it OC'd), so you should see a decent bump in clockspeed on a selection of the 6 cores anyway. As for performance relating to CPU cache, I haven't tested in enough detail to really elucidate much about that, but if you have specific requirements then I guess it must be a consideration.
