Anyone got one of these?, I heard you can expect better performance than a cone due to no heatsoak etc, but Im curious as to whether they give a similar induction sound?.

Rot.

You're not going to get rally car induction roar, but there will be a subtle change under load. When I had one on my previous car the most noticeable change was an extra 3-4mpg!

meh, not in my experience. The only way to make it louder was to stick holes in the airbox or fit a cone filter.

K&N do not filter as well as paper filters, you shuold do a search for the few independant tests out there. my car came with one, i replaced it as soon as i saw the holes in the cotton gauze (some not far from 1mm across)... its meant to be a filter

I recently purchased a replacement K&N element filter for my 1.8 focus, feels smoother and a little more responsive, sound wise, nothing to be honest. You'll get a heck of a lot of heat soak from an open cone filter and it will bog down quite a bit (Use to have a pipercross one on). Even if you setup a cold air feed your still going to get lots of heatsoak! If you are after induction roar then may I recommend removing the air box resonator.

i had a K+N Panel, they do add a little in terms of respnse and an extra note at full throttle, but nowt major. i spent 25 quid on mine and was happy with that.

i have since replaced with an Apexi Cone, now that is the shizzle, and i do turn heads on the street where i nail the throttle loll.

you should go have a look at the holes in your K&N 'filter'

what is the resonator?

It acts as a silencer to reduce induction noise. If the filter was unsafe then i'm sure k&n would have gone kaput many many years ago.

You will find that filters require holes to let any air through. The point of the cotton gauze in a K&N is to hold the oil which is what actually does the filtering. By itself the gauze would just about keep small rocks out.

and another point is, ive spoken to a fair few motocross riders who have all confirmed that their bikes all use dual lay oiled foam filters as in those conditions, nothing else cuts the mustard.

escorts were sold for years, corsas are still for sale, they sold falidamide for a long time too... does that make them a good thing?

It amazes me that people can consider the results of a completely uncontrolled experiment on a sample size of 1 to be remotely useful. As the cars in the above "reviews" are being driven on normal roads everyday, environmental factors could completely skew the results, and as there is no control sample it's not possible to eliminate these factors.

the control sample would be using the paper filter and doing the oil analysis. it amazes me that people will beleive the hype put out by magazine who are paid to give the right answers. if that wasnt the case, why do people end up buying ecotek valves etc.

A control sample would be another car of exactly the same type using a paper filter and being driven on the exact same route as the car with the aftermarket filter at the same time.

As for the Ecotek valve etc. the world is full of the naive, the gullible and the plain stupid. How else would Nigerian scammers make a living?

By the way I am not defending the K&Ns filtering ability, it quite possibly is worse than paper, most materials are. However, it really irks me that people testing these things have absolutely no idea how to set up a controlled experiment, which is the only way to get remotely meaningful results.

I was thinking of getting a K&N filter (or similar 'branded' one for mine) and I have the same as Tom, 1.6 Focus. I'm not interested in louder engine sounds though, but I have heard that they can let the engine 'breathe' better and give a better response and sometimes slightly increased efficiency.

Nickg, is £25 about what they cost? I thought that they might be much more expensive than that.

i just dont see the point in compromising something as crucial as air filtering for the sake of maybe gaining 1bhp
