K|NGP|N: Overvoltaging alone does not help ‘Maxwell’ to overclock

Bit confused.....

I don't use voltage to increase my OC as it made no difference on my 980

However I still get a very nice OC... +200 MHz on my base of 1266. (memory to 7600) Other than Benchmarking I see no need to clock over 100 Mhz +100 mem, which gives me a boost of 1466 in games.

Over reference that equates to 250MHz or 20% for games or 28% for benchmarking....

I have no issues with cooling at all or stability (outside of crappy optimized games)

However take a look here.

The 980Ti KPE clock for clock is more efficient than NVIDIA's reference boards, not only that but they're working on the BIOS in order to topple TX also.

Mixture of cleaner power from proper regulation/components and BIOS witchcraft I'd imagine

Tbf, for 99% of users who are probably mainly overclocking for games or benchmarks like those on here. The 980ti cards clock plenty out of the box without much effort.

This. Most Ti's are hitting 1500mhz anyways or not far off. My mates does closer to 1600mhz which is insane. My TX does 1440 without doing anything but moving a slider

Yeah it will make a difference but there's more to it than that from that jump. Also if you look the KPE is a few mV over the reference board (but not enough to make any real world difference and within polling margins)

Did you just boycott Kingpin? How is it slow? Because you squeezed a spot out with your reference card in a 2 minute egg run at slightly higher clocks and completely misunderstood the principle of what Vince is trying to convey?

Got ya. ;)

Wow - sense of humour failure!

I think we discovered all this in the owners thread.

Vince and 8PACK are professional overclockers and are also there to promote a brand of high end hardware. That's how they make their living.

So expect them to promote exotic overclocking because that's what they do don't be surprised by it.

The kingpin card is a niche product designed for extreme overclockers wanting to break records using LN2 same as the HOF.

If you don't want to use LN2 then you would be equally well served with any 8+8pin card with good cooling. If you intend to use air then get the best air cooler. If you intend to use water I'd just buy the cheapest 8+8pin cooler that warranties cooler removal if you care about the warranty.

It's common sense purchasing.

Fact is some people do want professional overclocker endorsed products there is a market for it regardless of whether it is actually better.

Oh and silicon lottery still applies to these cards.

Not really. All KPE and Classified are binned, and I've just shown you an increase in score clock for clock over reference models.

Sooo....

NVIDIA reference boards blow. Sorry but they do. Maxwell is a marvel strapped to a cheap PCB with cheap components, it's perfectly reasonable that some people, some of which do not even bench competitively want to use and 'play' with such products in order to have a performance edge. They do exactly what they're meant for, and function within the constraints of the VREGS present but Classified products offer much cleaner, more robust power which makes them the better card regardless of opinion, the only thing that the consumer needs to decide is whether it's worth the price difference.

If you do not intend on overclocking at all then the Classified range is probably not for you.

I get 150 point variations in bench runs - you're not showing clock for clock optimistaions - you're just showing variance.

NVIDIA reference boards blow.

Yeah, they blow so much that my OCUK ref card is the highest scoring/clocking 980Ti (excluding 8Packs LN2 cooled HoF monster) on these forums :D
