Kaspersky 2010 excessive internet usage

I installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 the other week but have noticed it eating up my internet bandwidth for no apparent reason. Since I'm with Virgin Media this is resulting in my being throttled - so I want to figure out what it's doing, and how to stop it!

So here's the scale of the problem: today so far it has downloaded 44.5GB (according to its Network Traffic monitor, accounting for roughly 90% of all network traffic) and uploaded 115MB. Last week it downloaded a total of 173.8GB

I'm running Win7 x64 on a home network with other computers on (internet through router). At first I wondered if it was scanning the files of other computers in my house (and therefore not using the internet) but there is no scan running, and the network usage continues even when I disable all components. It can't possibly be updating itself. Quite frankly, it's a ridiculous amount of data, and I've emailed Kaspersky about it but I'm still waiting to hear back from them; when (and if) they reply hopefully they'll be able to sort it out somehow but I thought I'd post here in case anyone has any ideas about what it could be, or what to try?
I did consider blocking Kaspersky access to the web but I'm unsure on how to block the program while still allowing it to update itself.

So, any helpful hints or ideas, or just condolences :p?

Cheers

I assume you have tried reinstalling Kaspersky?

I really can't think what it could possibly be doing to be sending and downloading data unless it's doing some sort of backup of everything you have. I would disable it to be on the safe side until you can figure this out. Who knows what it's actually downloading or uploading

I saw the same thing and wasn't sure what was going on. Thought it might be "registering" (for want of a better word) your net usage twice because it runs everything through it?

Try posting on the Kaspersky User forums, replied come in 3 ways, usually they tell you that you're making it up, or they'll ignore you, but occasionally there is a spark of genious and they resolve the issue instantly, with some piece of knowledge from the userbase.

Me too, I dumped it in favour of MSE, much faster browsing, and much faster starup and shutdown, my only issue now is adverts, Kaspersky did a good job of blocking adverts.

Get rid of it and use something else? I used to use it myself, and now I just use the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

I use MSE but also with Comodo firewall.
I also use Spybot Search and destroy with the above combo and I reckon, along with No-scripts for Firefox, it covers most of the potential issues and threats in a reasonable and affordable way.

I used to use KIS but found it quite "bloated" compared to the above I'm using now.

Miniyazz - I use KIS 2010 and do not have any problems like you have, in fact it is a lot less intrusive than using an earlier version with Vista.
Why don't you uninstall KIS and install MSE for a while to check.
Are you running a wireless link? - is somebody outside hooked into you?

I wouldn't ditch something like KIS just because your having a problem with it in favour of a free one like AVG or MSE which are good but not that bloody good.

Your network activity for KIS is shocking. My KIS figure last month was 7Gb which is shocking to me. There is a reason for this which I would love to know the answer on so I suggest you post on the Kaspersky forums which can be found HERE

I am sure there is a perfectly simple and good answer to it.

KIS isn't 'that bloody good'. Decent free AV is just as effective.

Where do you check to see your download/upload activity?

EDIT: Found it, mine is saying it downloaded 11gb and uploaded 2.7gb out of which KIS downloaded 5.4gb and uploaded 54mb

Why the hell would KIS download 5.4gb in a month?

From the My Protection Status page, click on the tiny writing that says 'Network Monitor'. Its just under the 'Online Activity' Heading.

Then click on the 'Network Traffic' tab.

Wow, another thread going the way most do, "I know more than you, don't listen to him."

Have you though about installing some other network monitoring software to make sure that it is display the correct usage, I would expect Cisco or Linksys provide some decent software, weather free or not I don't know.

It might be worth uninstalling KIS and continuing to use the network monitor and see if there are any difference.

Ideally you woul dneed somehting that shows you which process is downloading/uploading.

Hope this helps.

I have a feeling that other areas such as incoming emails etc contribute to this data collection total. Anything that comes through the network such as files from another computer will and should in theory add to the total.
