Kaveri APU Architecture Detailed

Then as far as I'm concerned that's a delay.
Paper launch is an attempt to save face, except with the 7970, that paper launch was acceptable given the time of year.

Might go quote some of my 2012 postings and post them up :p

That report is nonsense - there have been statements from AMD to say it's wrong. I think what they've said is that OEMs will get the finished thing this year but end users won't have it until January 2014.

I like the way they say AMD confirms a delay in the headline, and at the bottom they say AMD made no comment.

Even if end users don't get it till Q1 2014, that's still a delay.
Better news though :p

Without putting a downer on it, I'd love to see close to 7750 gddr5 from the apu. I expect what we'll see is 7730 ddr3 though.

I think it will be faster than that, The A10-6800K is just as fast as the 6670 GDDR3, which is already almost as Fast as that 7730 GDDR3.

So with GCN/2.0 I think we will be looking at 7750 GDDR5 performance.

We'll see humbug but prepare for another Richland me thinks !

Meh... nothing wrong with Richland, Richland is just a PD 'Tick' its more power efficient than Trinity and overclocks a hell of a lot better.

As far as I know all reviewers reporting 4.8Ghz minimum and a few 5Ghz.
While Trinity would struggle to get to 4.6Ghz.
Its exactly the same architecture on the same node, all its had is a few tweaks, its quite a big improvement for a few tweaks.

Kaveri is an entirely different chip and the first Desktop Chip with GCN Graphics.

That's not to say it wont be a complete fail, but.....

Oh yeah I've followed as much as I can on the Kaveri architecture, and hsa and cpu-gpu compute is the way forward. But its going to take time for software to develop and become widestream. I know its been discussed and rumoured about what Kaveri will use for memory bandwidth, but if it is released on ddr3 system shared memory then performance will be poor.

Richland is in essence (a c3 stepping of phenom II, but with working power gating) it's great as a mobile architecture but it doesnt cut it for the desktop. It should have been made on 28nm and it would have been awesome if it had used gcn, because that would have meant we'd see a stronger performing Kaveri.

I've seen some amazing overclocking with Richland 5ghz on all cores, 2133 memory and 1ghz on the 8670d. But in comparsion to an I3 in games that are poorly coded the 6800k gets hammered. However looking at opencl apps theres huge potential, hence in mobile format Richland is amazing.

edit in comparison to i3 in games I don't mean igp vs igp, I mean cpu performance of the I3 can provide better performance for a discreet gpu

Trinity was PD, but with its clocks, it was probably lower binned cores, the rest went into Vishera, they all run the same cores, except Richland as far as I know has always been billed as enhanced PD cores, they're probably just a more mature process, higher binned.

The FM2+ boards are available later this month, which suggests the APUs will be out far sooner than the spring 2014 rumours.

It doesn't have to suggest anything though.
They might come out close together, they might not.

I'd hope they do come out together though.

The fact that Kabini turned out not to have been delayed suggests to me that Kaveri will also not be delayed, they are the same Chip 'ish', the only real difference is higher clock rates and an FM socket as opposed to the BGA socket Kabini Uses.

Surely they aren't? Kabini is Jaguar whereas Kaveri is Steamroller. They've been designed from the ground up for totally different purposes (low power vs high performance)
