Kawasaki ZZR600 progress thread

The brake efficiency required to pass an MOT is so comically low, that you'd almost have to have no brakes at all for it to fail.

Quite surprised at that. It's definitely getting better though, I made a point of using it a lot this afternoon to wear off all the crap and it's definitely getting stronger.

Finally. Now to go for a ride

Just rode back from Normandy's, and it definitely needs tuning. It absolutely hates revving atm and is pretty gutless. It also reeks to high heaven and takes forever to drop when I rev it in neutral, so it's running rich. Will tweak it tomorrow then go for a little blat.

Having taken it out yesterday a few observations:

It runs far too rich at full throttle. On one occasion it hit close to 100mph, but as soon as I had a headwind it barely made it over 70. Slugging and chugging, it just refused to accelerate. Need to adjust the screws a bit more.

Changing from first to second is a pain. A few times I revved it out in first, tried to change up and it just stayed in first, so I looked a right tit. Dunno if it's just the new clutch or the fact it's a 35 year old gearbox that's causing it, time will tell.

I also got the tyre pressures right, so it felt completely different. I'd kinda forgotten that I was on tyres overpumped to 50PSI last time I rode due to the fitter wanting the bead to sit correctly. After reducing it to 36/41 PSI it feels much better.

It does feel weird riding a bike that looks like such a dog, but knowing how much work has gone in to it. Literally everything that matters is new apart from the rear shock (don't get me started!).

The adventure continues.

I'm definitely not looking at project bikes and diesel heaters on ebay today, no sir not me.

With the gear change check your chain adjustment, can make or break gear changes if the bike is a bit picky about it.

It wouldn't be the other way by this i been a shortage of fuel from a blocked fuel filter or kinked fuel line

I know one of the bikes i used to own was known for kinking the fuel line after lowering the fuel tank back down and this would stop the bike having any power at mid to high rpms

Also any water in the fuel can cause all kind of strange things

I need to replace all the fuel and vacuum lines tbh. I don't think this is the cause on this occasion, but the bike will definitely benefit from them being replaced.

I need to check what the OEM jet sizes are and go from there, it's got an aftermarket exhaust so it'll need jetting slightly richer from stock.

Too soon to tell tbh. Every time I ride it the roads have been wet so I've been quite careful. I'm hoping I can tune up the carbs a bit tomorrow and go for a blat, if it's dry I might push them a bit and see what's what.

Diddums finds a dry patch of road to test out his ZZR bike & tyres :D

So yesterday was interesting. Mate of mine met me at mine in the morning, and it refused to run on all four. Thought it needed warming up a bit, so rode it to his place and that fourth pot still refused to wake up. Fortunately I had my little socket set thingy on me so removed the seat and lifted the tank, only to see that the HT lead on cylinder 1 was just dangling on top of the cylinder head. Screwed it back in, refitted it and it screams like a banshee again. What I thought before was a fuelling issue must've been a loose HT lead, as it really flies now. So we went to Loomies for some brekkie so I could make others feel better about their bikes :p

I wish Loomies would get a proper coffee machine. I know they're positioning themselves at a certain level or whatever, but I just want decent coffee!

Ok, belatedly realised I posted a massive non ZZR progress post in the ZZR progress thread . Then eventually got to a laptop and moved it :).
