Hi,

Have been running my i7-5930K rock solid at 4.5 Ghz for about 3 years, a few days back over doing a windows update Win10 keeps crashing, seems to be "a thing":

I did a quick search for KB4100347 and nothing came up, surely other people on OcUK must have hit this?

Cheers

HEADRAT

PS Didn't really know whether to put this in CPU or Windows & Other Software!

Ah indeed,my rubbish attempt at searching, I see KB4100347 in my update history so I've uninstalled it.

Are these not the spectre mitigation updates?
The reason for the crash being plugging the holes is making the CPUs unable to run as fast as they previously could?
So its the old 'fast with lower security' or 'buckle up and go slower'?

more or less, and also turn off HT for the other holes.
BSD already advices it for security, and is going to be followed by Kali and Parrot Linux on demanding HT off on intel cpus.

Unless you are a data centre company or depending on Linux's user mode or user account security there is absolutely no reason to disable hyper-threading - the current issues have no remote execution vulnerability of their own but potentially allow an attacker already inside the system the ability to escalate access side stepping local security measures.
