I've recently been helping my brother with some tech support. After he had switched on his PC, Windows repair started and he got the message "Your device has run into a problem and couldn't be repaired. Press enter to see recovery options". We tried the various options including restore points but the only thing that actually worked was to reset the PC. After Windows had reinstalled itself the PC worked as normal. We then rebooted to make sure it still worked correctly, which it did. We wanted to find out what had caused the problem though and eventually we did. His PC has updates delayed for a week and a "Check for Updates" revealed five pending updates which immediately started downloading and installing. After the last of these, KB5101650 the mandatory July 2026 Security update, was installed the system requested a reboot. Upon rebooting the problem recurred.
I did some research on KB5101650 and it seems this is a known but rare problem, it installed fine on my PC for example. It is caused by a clash with an Intel driver but with only a few users affected, including a bunch with Dell PCs. MS have released KB5121767 as a fix for it although my brother hasn't installed this yet.
I thought I'd just make people here aware of the issue in case they have updates set to longer than a week's delay and therefore can look forward to this wonderful experience from MS in their futures.
