kd's noob to not so noob thread

You'll get used to how Lightroom mouseovers and actions work soon enough :p

Hover the cursor over the purple defringe slider then move the mousewheel. It moves in 5 step increments by default, one mouse wheel is what I find works as a good medium.

Definitely feel like I'm not doing something right XD

Hmmm It's ever so slightly better :p

You could use the brush actions to fine tune it I guess!

Weather's actually looking suitably glum today that whilst any sky in photos are going to be dull and grey, sunlight will be favourable....

Yeah, 4.2. Just LR in general to be honest. Having spent years with PS. Just the ability to quickly brush brush brush, and then make quick edits to things like saturation etc... Plus, I have a massive love of the HSL stuff.

To be fair I've still got a huge number of pictures to process. The Tree + Squirrel + Station were just those I'd stuck as highest on the ratings list xD

Right, that said. Long day.

Numbering these, just in case people want to make comments (appreciated).

In the end out of about 91 photos I ended up with 21 that made it to the final cut (these, on top of the three I've already posted). Frankly, some of the one's in here, looking at them now, I'm not massively happy with.

I've learnt a few things about wildlife though. Most notably, how hard it actually is to get the right shot, in the right settings. Things that like to move and are skittish are a right pain. These are the tamest Squirrel's I've ever seen, and they were still a pain to get. Hence a couple of photos that shouldn't have perhaps make it into the set doing so. Some of them were great shots, just required a lot of sharpening/exposure in LR (1+10), which means the end results not great anyway... Lighting's out in some, and I don't like the angle on the telephone box (I shot it without a tripod/beanbag etc.. around [another lesson learnt]), and as such however much I rotate the base to be the right angle, the perspective isn't quite right.

Oh, and I should probably say, the plant shot, came about because the ducks kept waddling away, so I decided to focus on something else instead. Turns out Ducks make nice bokeh xD

As always, feedback's appreciated :)

Uhm, I don't know actually xD

The animals, I was trying to get down on eye level with them. Partly because it's less intimidating, and partly because I felt it'd make a better shot rather than looking down on them.

Felt it worked for those shots. For the non-animals, I'm not so sure it seems like an easier shot to get right for some reason.

Looking at them now though, it does seem like I was crawling around all the time though :S

You are right that it is better when you are at the same level with the subject - kids, pet etc but it seem to be on everything else too lol

Yeah, I've realised that too now xD

For the Telephone Box, I know it was a case of low light issues. I've got about 15 failed photos of that exact image, where I simply couldn't hold it still for long enough to get the 'TELEPHONE' in focus. So think I resorted to sticking the camera on the ground.

Looking back at all the ones of the pub it seems that actually a lot were taken from that angle.

I like the path in the final one, but yeah, probably still would have worked.

I do have other images that weren't taken from the floor! but for some reason or the other, they haven't made it to the final cut :S

(Memo to self, take more photos standing up)

That said, if that's the only flaws you're going to complain about, I'm completely winning xD

There is nothing wrong with getting down on your face to get a low angle, just dont do it for every shot.

I've got a few examples of shots I took stood up at first but they felt flat with little perspective so I got the camera down low and felt they worked a lot better.

Its really all dependant on the perspective you wanted to create but equally sometimes you just need to stand there and let the subject do the work.

On the last few shots of the animals 1,8,12 & 13 look like the shutter speed was too slow and its caused some blur and 10 looks out of focus which would have immediately made them throw aways for me.

I quite like 3 & 16 though, the angle of shot and composition work quite well but I might have tempted to try and straighten the phone box :D

Danbo :D

Can I live here? by King Damager, on Flickr

I've already been told how to sort out the massive overly exposed eyes :)

I quite like the light bouncing off the inside of the tin. As some of you may have noted from the other Danbo pic in the post your pictures here thread I've started playing around with light.

I'm not quite sure about the composition of the lid and danbo's head being not straight, but didn't really like the bottom not being straight either xD

kd

Head not being straight is not an issue, What lens do you have? adding shallow depth of field will allow for a more creative approach and remove the distracting background you'll find in many shots where room to operate isn't that great :)

That's shot wide open :p F2.8 is the lowest I can go...

I have no idea what 'lens' is technically permanently attached (bridge issues), but it's made by Leica.

I want Christmas to hurry up.
