Keane & Vieira Best Of Enemies

Hopefully they show the clip of Vieira running away from Jaap Stam, it took pretty much both teams to hold Stam back and hard man Vieira was held back by.........Dennis Irwin :D

Fantastic program. I think I have a lot more respect for both of them now. They gave everything to their club. I don't think you have anyone in the PL right now like Viera or anywhere near the man Keane was.

I think Roy Keane has come out of this looking a far better person to all of us. Born Leader.

To be fair, I think Mike Tyson would back away from Stam!

Keane was a great player but he seems very bitter about how his career ended. Had he made a decent fist of it in management I think he may have realised that he gave Fergie an excuse to deal with a player who had a lot of influence but who was on the slide. You heard Keane say himself that in order to keep people in line and respecting him he felt he had to be the best player. That's actually a pretty outdated management philosophy and one which saw his power fade as he physically deteriorated.

One thing is for certain. United have not replaced him successfully since he left. I reckon a player like that would be worth £50m in todays market considering what was paid for Fellaini (or flamini as Roy called him last night).

As for the show - it was quite entertaining and did highlight that the game has changed a lot in the last ten years and not necessarily for the better. At least with Keane and Viera you knew that they would always leave it all out there on the pitch. Not many players are that committed these days.

It's a shame he turned so bitter about things, he left United saying he still had 2 years in him, then retired after 6 months at Celtic. He knew his legs had gone but was too stubborn and outspoken to be dropped or accept that he was finished at the very top.

I love Keane for what he did for United but if there was one person you would not expect to turn into a media whore it was him.

Legend to bell end.

Can u blame him though? A guy like him wants to be at the top i dont think he would be happy playing in the Scottish league.

Great program.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
What I was suprised about was that Arsenal have not won a single trophy since Vieira left the club.

So, if they win the title this year, it will be the first trophy they've won since he left.

Watched this last night too, and agree massively with Gooner Leroy. I doubt we'll ever see games like that ever again.

Vieira picked up on a good point that Arsenal don't have a true leader anymore, imagine if they have a Vieira now, they'd be walking this season!! I don't particularly think any of the big 4 have a true leader, maybe Kompany at City, but he's injured too much to have a great influence on games.

I must admit I didn't expect to go 8 years without a trophy but at the time I remember 'arguing' with people on here about what a disaster it was letting him go so cheaply (£13m for a player who was regularly talked about as a £30-50m player 1-2 years prior). Everyone kept banging on about how he was getting to be past it because he wasn't so effective going forward but as a ball-winner he was still top-notch and essential to the team.

Sadly pre-2006 posts have been nuked but you can see my follow-up to it here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=6469397&postcount=16
(nice thread actually, I'd almost forgotten about BoomAM trying to claim Arsenal weren't playing their 8th choice LB :D)

Anyway back on topic, I've only watched half the program so far but a couple of things jumped out at me:
-Keane ommitting Scholes from his MU XI, whereas Vieira said straight away he would include him, no thought required. I've never seen any player held as high a regard by opposition players relative to his profile as Scholes, all these world cup winning legends like Zidane, Henry, Fabregas, Xavi etc heap praise on him, say he's the best and they aspire to be as good as him, he should be player of the year, they want to play with him etc.
-It felt like because Keane is an ITV pundit he had to suffer fools gladly, i.e. respond deadpan to leading questions rather than just walking out. Example being the "best manager you've worked with" question, he said without a doubt Brian Clough, then Gabriel Clarke comes back with "not Sir Alex?" and Keane won't even acknowledge the guys name, he just says "you asked a question and I answered it".
-Nice moments seeing them look at old photos

As an Arsenal fan I hope there's a bit more Vieira in the second half, but Keane undoubtedly is a more interesting character / makes for better TV.

Arsenal missed him badly but he just wasn't as mobile any more and that's why he looked knackered, we were used to seeing him rampaging round the pitch and it was an awesome sight to see even as a United fan.

The only player that has ever come close to his mobility and drive since in the PL has been Toure but where Pat (I've had a few I can't spell Vieraraea) didn't go missing very often, Toure does. He had everything.

I will always thank him for the inch perfect pass to Giggsy :D
