Keele University

I'm in my third year at Keele and it is a bit out of the way but I like that and it really nice in summer. Keele isn't really in anywhere it is a campus university on the top of a hill surround by fields :p. The Union is massive and usually a good laugh on a night out. There are quite a lot of foreign students at Keele especially from the US and Canada which could be good for your friend. I don't know much about the Medical school but I think it is supposed to be quite good. It is about 10 miles from the centre of Stoke and you'd never have to go there if you didn't want to but I like Hanley which is the main bit in Stoke.

The first Keele building you see if you come from Newcastle way, by the little roundabout, is a something medical-y. All i know is that its full of dead bodies which they experiment on. :)

/fears the mutant zombie potential

(oh...my sister works there, thats how i know)

Have they ever been outside of Stoke?

At this very moment they are in Port El Kantaoui in Tunisia and they've been all over Europe with us.

Why?

Since you are an expert where else do you suggest they go in Stoke for nightlife.
I read somewhere that Newcastle Under Lyme has got the most bars/pubs/clubs in an area than any other place in Britain.

Did my PGCE at keele last year and i quite liked it. Nice green campus out of town and most of the people are really friendly. Had quite a few good nights out there. Granted Newcastle and Hanley are nothing compared to other cities for night life but they are ok.... I am nursing a Newcastle night out hangover as I type.

I suggest they get a train to Manchester or Liverpool. Hanley is a mediocre nightlife centre at best, only with more violence and scumbags.

Keele is out in the countryside about 5 minutes from Newcastle-under-lyme, frequent bus services get you into town very quickly.

My rare visits to Keele were okay, I can understand the term 'Keele Bubble' as you are more isolated than most universty campuses, it has it's own bars clubs and shops.

On a wam summers evening it's not a bad place to be - I suppose if asked I'd say it was like an old fashioned holiday camp. I don't think locals go there and you should need a student union card to get in.

Oh, and anyone saying newcastle-under-lyme is part of stoke-on-trent is obviously suffering from stoke-on-trents legendary education standards.

Newcastle-under-lyme is a borough of Staffordshire county council while Stoke-on-trent is a unitary authority within Staffordshire's borders.

Hanley is a horrid place at night, only reason to go there is the coach makers arms on the outskirts, recommended for your friend if he wants to see a 'real english pub'.

I'm not keen on the clubs and bars at the best of times and Hanley has the worst examples of both, not a friendly place to be at night.

never thought i would see the coachmakers mentioned here, go up there quite a lot, before and after a jaflong (curry house next door)

I'm in my second year at Keele, living currently in stoke which isn't as bad as people make out. The Campus is really nice especially Keele hall around summer time, lovely lakes and fields to chill in, I can't wait personally to get back on campus in the 3rd year and enjoy it.

Academically when I joined the University was 31st in the Time rankings...Its not slipped somewhat dramatically but league tables at the moment don't take into account teaching quality (which is excellent for my subject law). Nevertheless the Medical school has just opened this year as well as pharmacy so it should pick up popularity wise.

Oh and the nightlife is not that bad. I'm not going to lie and say its on par with Leeds and Manchester etc, but some people make stoke out to be so much worse than it is - Hanley is pretty good on a Monday. Plus in the summer there is some legendary forest raves on campus, they are amazing!!

Keele is great, especially for the sciences. I did my BSc at Keele, and because I'm a Stokey, born and bred, I saved a packet on living expenses. :)
