We've had our lab for just over three months now since getting him when he was 2 months old. He lives in our porch in between the kitchen and downstairs toilet. It's a pretty small porch and he's growing bigger everyday.
We've just got him a big sized bed and with that in there there's not that much room for him to move around.

So I've been thinking about moving him outside, during the day anyway. We have a rectangular space in our exterior building that is ideal for a kennel to fit in there, the dog would then have the whole garden to do what he pleases.

Who keeps their dogs outside? I'd probably bring him in at night. I'm not thinking of doing this until he's fully grown anyway.

What do you guys think?

Andy

The only dogs I know that live outside are proper working dogs, police and farm; otherwise inside.

It is ok to keep 'em outside so long as the kennel is large enough and warm enough etc though why you have a dog as a pet and then keep it outside does baffle me.

I'm doing it for the dog not for me. The GF and I are out at work during the day so it doesn't really matter if the dog is in or out. The dog will always be a pet I just thought he'd appreciate having more room to mess about.

If your working full time and the dog will be alone all day then maybe you should have thought twice about getting a dog.

Bloody hell, I'd love to see all the people who have pets and don't work!! Get a grip.

My family have always brought up dogs and they've worked full time, I work 5 minutes from my house too so pop back when I can.

Bring him in when you get home, fuss him etc.

Small shed outside with all his stuff in, toys, blankets, what not.

Garden needs to 101% escape proof. Dogs dig, so make sure he cant dig under a fence.

You'll be amazed how much trouble he can get up to when you are not there ;)

Richie.

Oh I know mate, skirting boards are all gone :p

We'd always planned to move him into the kitchen when he was bigger but he may enjoy being outside more, he usually can't wait to get out.

Can you get a dog flap, so that he can let himself in and out during the day?

He's going to be a BIG lab. I think the local chavs would get in my house :p

Look at them paws!

I think you've not done your homework on the breed of dog you have, and would be a total retard 'moving' him outside.

Why do you have him in the first place?

How the **** do you mean, you keep him in your toilet?

He is not a 'working breed' dog, as such anyway. So I would advise against it. Also he will smell, role in his **** and **** and your house will smell as a result (if you let him back in).

. pfft owners. :(.

Oh clam down dear... Christ.

If you read my post before having a hissy, I clearly write he's in a porch between THE KITCHEN AND THE DOWNSTAIRS TOILET, are you implying my toilet is in my kitchen??

He's well trained to go to the toilet in the garden, I'd fully expect him to do the same and when he was to be in the house (night time) as he is now.

My family have always had Alsations that had the option to go outside into a run if they wish and they loved it, they are alos loving pets. Not working dogs.

If i knew where you lived, i'd report you. Its disgusting to keep a dog outside, especially when there pet dogs.

Either take him to the RSPCA shelter, local dog sanctuary, or learn how to look after it.

You shouldn't buy a dog if your out of the house all day and then come on here and moan.

Please report me then, I'll be happy to tell RSPCA how I treat my dog. Would you like my contact details? Email in trust?

If your that thick not to be able to read my post properly don't bother replying.

Let me get the points down again...

- Sully is a very happy puppy that gets more than enough attention throughout the day. Mostly 8am, 12 o'clock, then at 5pm. More than a few occasions I come between these times due.
- Sully would not of lived outside, he would have gone outside whilst we are at work so he has a lot more freedom. He would have had a kennel to go into and toys to play with.
- Sully would come inside once we are home like any other pet.

Would you like me to elaborate on anything else?

What happened if it started to rain, hard, then got cold really quick?

What about if someone came and just stole him? Happens more then you think.

Your dog will soon start to learn that you leaving the house = dumped outside.

He'll start to resent you and start having behavioural issues.

He'll smell and be muddy, would you bring him inside if he's all muddy on your lovely carpet?

Dogs legally are not meant to be left alone for longer then 4 hours, so the RSPCA would probably like to talk to you about that.

See, your PRESUMING, do you have a clue what my house is like, or the garden? No.

If it was bad weather in the morning, he'd be kept inside, if it started raining, I'd go home and let him in, if he was filthy and muddy (for reasons unknown??) I'd clean him and bring him into his normal room which has laminate flooring so unless my lovely clean carpets can get dirty from there? I'm not sure...

Like I said, Invite them round :)

No he doesn't look that unhappy, just in pain because you have a crappy plastic bed.

Did you ask the breeder about his elbow and hip scores? Eye scores?

He's got conjunctivitus hence the red eyes (no we didn't inject him with this)

Stand him up and take a photo, looks a show lab, which are in my opinion more of a bull mastiff then a Labrador.
What do you mean? That he isn't a real lab?

Did you check his scores? Dont avoid the question.

No, i don't mean he isn't a real lab, just show labs look more half bred with a bull mastiff then a Labrador.

I haven't had them checked, no. I wasn't avoiding the question.

Only his father was KC registered. We didn't get him from a breeder.

So where did you get him from? If he was KC reg'd, then you should be able to check on his scores.

A family who's dog had a litter for the first time, more accidental than anything. We were happy to get Sully for being a dog and not the paperwork. We are not going to breed.

If Sully is to get poor hips then what can we or any other buyer do about it? He's fully looked after by us and a local vet. So please stop patronising me with your talk.

A mod can close this thread now. Cheers.

Why would you keep your dog inside for most of the day? My dog hated being left inside; she scratched the doors to ribbons and begged to go outside.

That's kind of my point, Sully can't wait to get outside which got me thinking would he prefer to be out there during the day.

Despite what people think, I love the dog, I'm not doing this for me, I asked for people's advice on here. Obviously people feel strongly about this and thinking I'm cruel but this isn't the case at all. I am an animal lover, have always had pets and my GF was quite hurt with the accusations flying around this place!

I just wanted the dog to be even more happy, at the moment he loves us, we give him more than enough attention and I think people are living in fantasy world if they think families get dogs and don't work! I bet the majority of animal owners go off to work at 8am and don't come back to their pets until evening time. Time's change..If I could see he dog every 3 hours I would but it's impossible. If RSPCA have an issue with this I'll let them take the dog if it's in his best interest.
